Recently I have purchased and downloaded the game. When starting it, it gives me a white window that immediately shuts itself down. I tried installing it with and without the update.

Going through the crash logs, it gives me the following:

The logs saying 1.03.1, but I'm aware of the thread that states that 2.0.0.9 = 1.03.1.

Both Stderr and Stdout are in the clear.

EAH5450. I've got the up to drivers from Asus's site (2011 build at least), and I don't think I can go for 1280x720.

Newer video card drivers may be available from ATI's site. You could also try editing the game's settings.ini file and try setting stretched=1 and perhaps manual=1.

Last time I tried upgrading to an ATI thing, it ended up telling my card that it no longer existsed, and I had to put my head into repairing it for a weekend. I will try the settings however.

It did not work!

At first I had a similar problem (but there seemed to be an error message or something), in the end it was resolved by setting the windows compatibility to windows vista or xp, I think. Have you tried this yet?
