Hello!

Just like what the title says, I've never played any games coming from the Freespace series before. I actually was introduced to this series by the second Freespace, which I found quite a long time ago, but had never, ever realized that the game would be really good. I mean, today, I just watched one of the gameplay videos for Freespace 2, and was astonished with the really immersive experience I've had with that game, even just by watching someone plays it. That's just one of the many things that make Freespace 2 great in my opinion (sorry, but I mostly go for gameplay videos of Freespace 2 rather than the first one in fact).

Now, I would like to ask you guys a question which many of you might see it as dumb. The question is, can you name the character whom you'll be playing in the story campaign of the game? At least a profile slot which lets you name your profile with whatever name you like.

Thank you. :)

Yes, you have to create a "pilot" when you start the game, but of course whatever name you choose the few times you will be mentioned or addressed you will be called with the callsign "Alpha One".

If I remember correctly your "real" name is only used in the medal case and other text only stuff.

Oh, I see. It's good enough for me I guess.

Thanks for answering! I really appreciate it! :)

I think the relative anonymity that you have in the game is one of its strengths. You aren't the special ultra high commander or anything like that, you're just one wing leader in a war much bigger than yourself. I remember someone talking about how the idea was to make the player feel like "just one cog in a great machine." Of course, you do have some pretty important missions and stuff, many of which have big impact, especially towards the end of the game.

Oh, and to the OP, it's completely fine that you favor Freespace 2 over 1. I played 2 first, which I found in my search for "THE" definitive/best arcade-style space combat game on the PC. It did not disappoint! I liked it so much that I bought and played 1 just for kicks. 2 is definitely the stronger title, though, and it has tons of mods and updates from fans still to this day.

Play the game Forsaken..... awesome!
If you play Freespace make sure you upgrade it with the Freespace Open project which greatly improves the game.

I heartily agree, although personally I like to play through a game first without mods to get the original, authentic experience. After that, if improvements are available, then I would get them for sure! And as far as Freespace Open, I have loved it to death! Blue Planet was such a freakin' amazing fan campaign, with awesome story and full voice acting and everything! And the graphical updates for the base game are beautiful.
