I just got the Logitech Extreme 3D pro joystick to play with freespace 2. I finally figured out how to properly install it on windows 7 and get it to work in FS2 open, so now I'm wondering how to best change and configure the controls in the game. It works fine, and I can just re map some functions to keyboard, but i want to know if anyone uses a different control scheme than whats already set, and if so, what?

I also want to know how to map a function to the twist handle, since it doesn't do anything at the moment.

I have that joystick. It's a good stick. :)

For mapping everything in game, one goes to the options room and click on control config. From there it should just be a matter of double clicking the action you want to map and then moving, pushing, or twisting the joystick axis/button to which you want to map it. So for instance I have the Bank axis mapped to the Joystick's Z (twist-handle) axis, and the X and Y being yaw and pitch respectively (default for the latter two I think). I double-clicked on Bank and then twisted the handle of the joystick to map.

I do play slightly differently from the default for the joystick, but I kept the keyboard layout as default. However, you should probably find what functions you use the most and what the best way to organize them is for you since it needs to be comfortable and quick. However, here's my organization:

Button 1 : fire primary
Button 2 : fire secondary weapon
Button 3: cycle secondary weapon bank
Button 4: launch countermeasure (though I'm thinking of switching 3 and 4)
Button 5: target ship in reticle
Button 6: cycle forward primary weapon bank
Button 7: target closest attacking ship
Button 8: target target's closest attacker / or target next hostile bomb or bomber - I've used one or the other there
Button 9: Equalize shields
Button 10: Reverse thrust / or augment forwards shields - again I've used one or the other
Button 11: afterburner
Button 12: match target speed

throttle control (Rz in game): absolute speed (default)

There's mine. :)

Thanks, I think I got it all! I'll play around with it in the morning to see if what settings I like best.
These are the secondary functions that I use most and have mapped to my stick.

Afterburner
Countermeasure
Equalize shield
Weapon power to shield (this will save your life)
Target ship in reticle
Target nearest attacker
