I'm sorry for posting this again, I posted this as a reply last time by accident and it didn't get moved or anything so I'm just gonna post it again and hope the other one is deleted =]
I have installed Freespace 1 on my Windows Vista. When I try to run it the intro cinematic runs perfectly but then the welcome screen is just black with a few nearly illegible words. If I move my mouse around it makes sounds as if there should be buttons where the black area is. If I go into any other menu the old letters stay there and the new letters start appearing on top of them making everything impossible to read. I attached a screenshot of the welcome screen. Thanks for any help you can provide; I didn't find a fix in the FAQ for this problem.

Have you tried simply uninstalling/reinstalling or re-downloading and re-installing?
do you have an nvidia graphics card? sometimes those have issues with the newer drivers.
also, if nothing else works, try installing the FSOpen (sticky at the top of the forums has a link somehwere), which updates the graphics in a lot of places, might help with the opening screen as well, although Vista in general is more finicky.
I installed Freespace Open and it has basically the same problem. I can see the background image but still no buttons and no text this time =/ My graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4350. My roommate also has a Radeon and Windows Vista and both Freespace 1 and Freespace Open work perfectly on his computer. I am in despair >.<

I haven't come across this exact problem however my advice would to have a look though thr Hard-Light forums as they are the FS2 Open crowd and have a lot of support and advice.

I fixed it .... its all about graphics card setting.
Make sure you have selected "Application preference" on all 3D settings in your Catalyst control centre / Ati tray tools for ATI (and whatever conf utility you Nvidia guys are using :)
BTW You should have such setting for almost all games. By setting anything else than aplication preference you could only achieve better quality in old directx games which doesnt have their own configuration screen or utility. I had antialiasing and other things maxed in cards utility for my Shadow of Destiny resulting in this error in FS1.
I find "solution" already here http://www.gog.com/en/forum/Freespace_Series/strange_problem_with_text_fs1 but replying just to be sure... :)
