Hello,
I just installed Freespace 2 and it does not appear to work with my Logitech Attack 3 joystick. Things I have tried:
1. Freespace setup has my joystick selected
2. Windows control panel has my joystick as the preferred control device.
3. Joystick works fine in battlefield 1942 and all other games.
4. Operating system is Windows XP Pro.
Thanks for any help.

Mouse control does not work either. I have the default controls set and have not changed anything.
Have you enabled mouse input? As far as I recall it isn't enabled by default.
You could also try FreeSpace Open, a source port with many added features; better joystick support might be one of them.

I did not have mouse support enabled, it now is so I can fly with the mouse but not with the joystick, although the trigger on the joystick works. Strange. I did double check and the joystick is binded properly with the controls in the configuration.
I will try downloading freespace open. Thanks for the suggestion.
