Installed fine and intro runs no problems but from there I’m getting huge problems. The game runs very sluggish, after I managed to create a name (took me a while) the menu (the hanger) just doesn’t work for me. If I move the mouse it reacts about 3seconds later on the screen. The animation in the hanger is stopping and starting very slowly. First time I’ve had a problem like this, granted it’s only my second game off GOG 
Am I missing something obvious here?

I strongly advise using freespace open when trying to play freespace. Its alot more modernhardware friendly. It even has better graphics but those are optional so you can play either normal graphics or with improved graphics.

Richdog has also made a very handy guide to installing and running freespace open.

Don't be put off by it saying freespace 2, you can import the entire freespace 1 campaign into the freespace 2 open source project.

So am I right that you’re saying I should purchase Freespace 2 then import the campaigns from the first one?

Oh sorry I didn't realize that the open source project actually required Freespace 2, though it makes sense now I think about it. I would say its probably your best option, though if you don't want to fork out for freespace 2 now I'm sure either the community or gog can get your vanilla freespace 1 game running.
