Im a person who gets really immersed in space games. I never got the chance to play freespace 2, and was wondering if there was a first person style mod for the game. in a way like decent is or darkstar one and such. it just kinda bothers me alittle not being "inside" the ship. I know its a vanity thing more then anything it just helps with being more immersed in the black ^.^

I'm confused. What do you mean by first person style mod? Typically first person means you see through the eyes of the character, in this case a pilot, in which case, the standard game is in first person. You sit in the cockpit and look out of the fighter or bomber. You don't fight in third person - i.e. viewing your ship from the outside. There is a 3rd person perspective that you can choose, but I've never actually seen anyone talk about flying in anything other than the first person in Freespace 2. The perspective is the same as the X-Wing series of games.
i know the position is first person but it seems to be the equivalent of a on the dash perspective. {like racing games have} but i want kinda like a full view where you can see the dashboard with the monitors and the buttons and such. im still picking it up i was just wondering. look at the screenshots to descent or darkstar one to get an idea of what i mean

I think I understand. You want to see a cockpit? I think in Freespace the "cockpit" is thought to be there but you have a visual feed to your helmet so you get an unobstructed view with the Hud relaying all the information/controls that you need.

However, there are a few mods that do indeed show a cockpit but I don't know if they work with standard Freespace campaign. For instance, the stand alone Battlestar Galactica mods for Freespace 2 have cockpits and I've seen videos of other mods with cockpits but none of them were for the standard campaign. For many of the total conversion mods you don't need retail Freespace 2, just Freespace 2 Open Source engine (FSO). Visit www.hard-light.net and you can find instructions about how to download the engine and mods. That said I would highly recommend the Freespace 2 game (especially in the kept up-to-date open source engine) even sans cockpit.

No problem. There's one BSG mod (Beyond the Red Line) which, though playable, never came out of demo mode, and another (Diaspora) which is made up former members of the BtRL team that is currently in development. Screen shots and videos of Diaspora look very promising:

Raptor video showing both 3rd and 1st person perspective.

My pleasure. :)

BTW if you like space sims with cockpits, check out the two independence war games on GOG.com. They also feature full Newtonian physics.

Hmm ... I dunno ... to be honest I haven't fully played through both yet (GOG backlog weighing me down!). They are somewhat different from each other. Independence War 1 is more of a classic mission-based space sim with some branching points in the story. Independence War 2 is much more open and free form but it still has a story/mission plot. Actual gameplay, fighting, controls, etc are also a little different between the two games. I think getting both would be ideal, but I'm not sure which I would get if I had to choose one. If you are on a tight budget, GOG does run sales regularly and they *might* run a sale for these games, but you can never be sure when - only that it will be after you break down and buy the games! :P

As an aside, there is a dev for I-war Defiance and I-war 2 who hangs out on the I-war GOG forums answering questions by the name of Ravenger. He has a thread here.
