Hard Light is THE essential Freespace site on the net, biggest community you will find. Highly recommend The Babylon Project. You don't even need FS2 to play it (as it is based on the game's free source code):

1. FSO isn't actually a "mod". It is a modified version of the FS2 game engine, and even though it contains a lot of new features, you'll have to have actual mods that can take advantage of them.
2. HLP is indeed THE FreeSpace community in the internet. You'll find the majority of mods there. By majority I mean that if there are mods elsewhere, a select few people know about them and haven't bothered to tell anyone else.
