I got a question does the game have a level select? or do you just beat the game then restart? Also I heard about a character customization do you unlock character customization later or is it only available in 2?

It has skirmish mode called Danger Room.

In both games you can create custom heroes. They are available for recruitment in campaign but can't level up.
