Open the config file and edit the save path. It shoudl point to the directory where the saves are located.
I can't load a game either. I just get an insert disk 3 or a error 3 message, or it doesn't bring up a loading prompt at all when I try to mess with the game.cfg file, which looks like this:
V

C:\SAVE\
F
C:\
C:\
N
M

Any advice?
Thanks for the suggestion Starmaker, but like Banichi, I still can't get it to work. I've tried to change the path in the conf-file in different ways, but it just results in an "unexpected error 3"-message when I try to load. I've also tried to move the /SAVE to the other two C: in the conf-file, but it didn't work.

The advice in the forum-discussion Starmaker linked to doesn't seem to work for Gateway to the savage frontier (Discussion was about a similar problem with Pool of radiance), at least not directly translated.

I found this information that may help:

Q: When I save a game in Gateway to the Savage Frontier and later
try to call it up, the computer asks me to "Insert Disk 3 in drive
C:". What's going on here?

A: If you save your game after creating characters but before you
begin adventuring, you will get this message. All you need to do
is begin adventuring after creating a set of characters, read the
messages setting up the adventure, and save at the earliest
possible opportunity. You do this by encamping and choosing the
save option. You are now free to quit or adventure to your
heart's content. Good Luck!

I was having this same issue. I created my party, began adventuring, then encamped at the earliest moment. It allowed me to save then load the save game.

Thanks Mok3, it worked!

I did exactly that, spent a lot of time creating my party, and needed a break,
so I saved before starting adventuring.

When I got back to the game and was unable to load, I did the same thing again,
quickly created a character, to see if it would work this time, and, of course, the same thing happened again...

Now I can finally start playing, really appreciate the help Mok3 :)
I've tried to follow the solution here, but it's not working.

I open the .cfg file in Notepad and change the target for the TotSF save (C:\GOGGAMES\TREASURESOFTHESAVAGEFRONTIER\SAVE) and change the target for GttSF save (after copying all of the files int he GttSF "Save" folder) (C:\GOGGAMES\TREASURESOFTHESAVAGEFRONTIER\GATEWAYSAVE). I save the game (as a .cfg file -- still shows as a config file, not another file type).

I then go into TotSF, create one character, add that character to the party, begin adventuring, then try to save, but I get an error indicating the directory can't be found.

I've tried many methods many times, but I just can't get this to work. Any help?
DOSBOX does not recognize folder and file names larger than eight characters, but trunctuates them.
You need to use the trunctuated folder names, or rename them to something shorter.

That didn't EXACTLY tell me what I needed to know, but that got me close enough to figure it out. Thanks.

I don't have the games installed, so I couldn't be more specific, but I'm glad you figured it out.
Not solved.

I have a problem that is ALMOST exactly the same. When I try to load a saved game that I have been playing a while, it gives me an error of "Insert disk 7 into drive C" and then locks the keyboard up so I have to use the "windows" key to get out of the program and shut it down. No, even the "Esc" key does not work.
Disk 7 (seven)?
Why, are you playing the C64 version?
