Wth.

I really wish I would have known this beforehand. I lost a lot of great items I was storing there for when a couple characters surpass their dual class at the start of PoD. Shields+4 ... things like that. All of my + ranged weapons and ammo.

This really sucks. I knew items wouldn't transfer from the vault, but I had no idea the vault would be closed when you returned to town.

My last save is too far back - in the castle, but I don't want to go through those last two battles again anyway.

Oh well. Maybe someone playing it for the first time now will see this and GET WHAT YOU WANT FROM THE VAULT BEFORE DEFEATING THE FINAL BATTLE.

You do realize that you can transfer characters between different saves? In particular, you can load a save where the items are still in the vault, give a character items from the vault, then Remove that character from the party. Then, you can load that character with the items into your new save and transfer the items that way. (Or, just transfer the character directly to Pools of Darkness.)
Lol, thanks.

I had no idea how to do that, but I gave it a shot and got lucky ...

In the vid I watched to transfer your party from Secret to PoD, it has you copy your entire SotSB folder and paste it into the PoD folder, then renaming it"SECRET" and loading your last save from Secret when you start PoD. Which works perfectly, just I had no idea how to transfer a single character ...

So I loaded a save in the castle before I won, which had me on level 1, went to the teleporter and back to town. In training hall created a character aptly named "Items" and removed a char from party to make room for him. Went to the vault and got everything I wanted for PoD - mainly the +4 shield and +3 plate for my lvl 15 thief, who at the beginning of PoD went to level 17 surpassing his previous profession of a level 15 ranger. He's also equipped with Oswulf's Silver Longsword +5 so he's going to be a backstabbin mofo once I get PoD a-rollin.

I also had several Composite Long Bows +2 in there, a Fine Long Bow, and a Long Bow +2, along with plenty of different + arrows. But honestly, I NEVER use ranged weapons. But, I hear PoD is much more difficult than the previous games so I want to have them 'just in case'.

Anyway, back to the single character transfer: I stocked him up, saved in a diff slot, went back to the training hall, and "removed him from the party". Closed game.

Now, in PoR when you did that it created a .CHA file (in this case it would be "Items.CHA") that you simply copy/pasted into Curse. Not here .... so I backed up my PoD entire directory, and tried a couple things. Even though there was no '.CHA' file, there were two "Items" files (my new carrier PC). I firstly tried copy/pasting those over to PoD the same way as transferring in Curse, but no luck. Then, it hit me - organize the files in my Secret save directory under "date last modified". I had saved in "H" when finished, and there it was along with about 12 other H-related files and my 2 "Item" files. So I copied all of them with that date (like 12:14 this morning) and pasted them into the "SAVE" folder in my new "SECRET" folder in the PoD directory, re-writing about 12 files. Viola! Start up PoD and there he is.

So anyways, thank you. It didn't even occur to me to try anything like this.

There was probably an easier way to do it lol
It's worth noting that this sort of trick has a few other uses that some may consider exploits. Namely:
1. You can duplicate items (and even characters; I've done that by accident) this way
2. In PoD, from what I have read some items won't come with you to other planes. You can, however, abuse this sort of trick to smuggle items into (and out of) the other planes.

If you leave the town and come back again, the "celebration" should be over and almost everything's back to normal, including the training hall, vault, temple, and weapons shop. (The magic shop is indeed closed for good once you beat the final battles, though.)
