So I'm having this issue in Pool of Radiance where I train my magic user to level 3, after training I'm given a list of spells to choose from, some level 1, some level 2, and some level 3. I've tried choosing a level 3 spell and the game tells me that I can't learn than spell.
Rather than letting me chose a different spell it shows me my party so that I can choose a different character to learn that spell. All I can do is exit and my magic user (now level 3) just doesn't get any new spells. I can restart the saved game and try again but I get the same result.

One aspect of AD&D (and many early CRPGs that copied from it, including Wizardry, Bard's Tale, and Final Fantasy) that can be confusing and counter-intuitive is that character level and spell level are different.

At level 3, you can only learn spells up to level 2; to learn a level 3 spell you need to be level 5. Yes, the same term is used for two different features. Why it is this way, I don't know.
You shouldn't be offered any lvl 3 spells.
You get lvl 2 spells when you reach level 3, lvl 3 spells when reaching level 5 and so forth.

Thanks that is new information for me. Okay so I went back to the game and trained again and saw that the spell I'm trying to pick up (Stinking Cloud) is actually level 2. It's on the second page of spells so I guess I mistook that for level 3 spells. When I try to learn it it tells me "Low Experience or Wrong Class". My magic user is level 3 after training.
