I'm in desperate need of converting coin to jewelry as my characters are all encumbered. Poor souls hauling around 900+ PP each :-(

But ... when I enter the Jeweler's Shop in the Civilized Area of New Phlan (map key 24 in the Clue Book) the store is empty - there is no storekeeper. The map coordinates are 8,10 and it's directly behind a General Items Shop. You have to pass through a door in the General Items Shop to get to the Jeweler's shop.

Any idea what's going on? I've not attacked anyone and am in good standing - so it's not a question of poor reputation. All other shops are open as expected.
It's only open either at day or at night. Shops are only open in the daytime, but I have some vague recollection of this one being open only at night.

That's why I though. But that means you have to break into the store in front of it. You have to decline the first shop owner's offer to show you something then go through his shop's back door and the Jeweler will be present.
Maybe it was one of the regular shops that changed during the night? Been some years since I played PoR, so I don't recall excactly...

As far as I know it is supposed to be open, it sounds like some sort of bug. Maybe try reinstalling the game (backup/move your saves/characters first so they're not lost, I'm not a Windows user so I really don't know how installing works on Windows).

In any case, money is virtually useless in PoR after you've bought Fine Composite Long Bows for all your fighters from the Silver Shop at (11,10). You really only need a few hundred PP on hand for ID & Training, you can just leave the rest of the coins behind (you still get the XP for finding it). (You will also lose all your money when starting Curse of the Azure Bonds if you're planning on continuing after PoR, so no need to save up for that either).

You are probably thinking of the back door at (9,14) where you can enter an arms shop at night, all other shop doors are locked.

How do you leave your coins behind? Do you drop them at a certain spot in Phlan like in front of the Adventurer's Guild?

Thanks for the heads up on the Jeweler....I had no idea you can convert coins to gems.

What I mean is just don't take the coins after the battle. They'll be lost forever, but you don't need them anyway (after purchasing the aforementioned "Fine Composite Long Bows" from the Silver Shop).

Thanks, very helpful.
yes you can drop your coins anywhere. i just keep jewelry and sell as needed usually get 200-1000 platinum for each piece.
I had the same problem. I forgot which I did, but Looking, Searching or Encamping in the jewelry shop brought the shopkeeper up.
