There's a good article in PC Gamer with the same title as the title of this thread.

It helps to understand the legal hoops GOG has to jump through to be able to publish some of the good old games. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
So GOG didn't just license them, they bought them! At least now we finally know who the holder of the rights are now. :)

I wish I had a team of programmers, artists and animators.. Would be great to crowdfund a modern UI/graphics redo of the Gold Box games... One that doesn't tinker with the combat and exploration gameplay but streamlines it everything else!

So awesome that GOG bought them. Article doesn't mention anything about the dragonlance or buck rogers games. I very much hope they were part of the deal as well!
I read that the Dragonlance Gold Box games are being worked on now for release soon.
This is a really interesting article. I'm glad GOG was willing to track down and wrangle the rights for these games.
A nice little read. Thanks for posting a link.
As for what's still missing from SSI that we can HOPE is coming down the pike: The Krynn Trilogy, the two Dark Sun games, the two Ravenloft games, Al-Qadim, Spelljammer, and the two Buck Rogers Gold Box titles....anything missing there?? Any reason to think they wouldn't have gotten ahold of these also??

Some of the GOG staff in the release thread were being rather coy when Ravenloft was mentioned. I think it's a pretty sure bet that they have the rights for the rest of the SSI D&D catalog.
Any chance they managed to snag SSI's Star Command too? I would love to see a remake of that game.
I think that GOG has been doing really great work when they saved these games from the copyright limbo and made them legally available again.

I really hope that they will also publish other SSI's roleplaying games, like Phantasie -series. Amiga version of Phantasie III: The Wrath of Nikademus was the first computer RPG I ever played and I still consider it as one of my favourite RPGs.
