This is something I've searched for on and off over the years, but I've never found anyone else talking about it. Me and my cousin used to play the Gold Box games on his Commodore 64C. In Pool of Radiance specifically, there was this bug that could be triggered by using the “Join” command in your inventory on multiple bundles of 255 arrows. If you kept joining, sometimes a game-breaking item with a weird name would show up in your inventory.

It happened twice. We never figured out what conditions we needed to reproduce it. The first time, the item was called *BAG. The second time, it was called LONG SWORD LONG SWORD. You could equip either one as a weapon, and it allowed you to one shot anything. The damage was something insane like 12d20. I’ve always wanted to know what the heck that was. Does this ring a bell for anyone else?

Yes, it happened to me too (also on C64). Although I never tried to exploit it, I was careful to avoid it once I figured out what caused it. It happened when I tried to (H)alve joinable items (such as arrows) when the character's inventory is already full. If I recall correctly, it replaces the top item in the inventory with a new nonsensical item.

EDIT: I just googled it, and I found this:

EDIT2: GOG forum doesn't like that link due to the special characters, you'll have to pull it out of the text above.

This is the first time I've had this memory validated by anyone other than my cousin in literally over 30 years. Unbelievable. Thank you for that link!
