Hi, every time I try to descend the ladder in the watershed area of Necropolis in order to enter the vault with the water chip, the loading screen just freezes right as I descend and I can't continue. I've tried reloading my save file, restarting my computer and doing everything I can think of to bypass it but it seems to be encrypted into my game save and I was wondering why that might be the case? I have a Macbook Pro 2010 with 10.6.8 OS, thanks for your help!
Okay so I restarted my game and got to the same spot in Necropolis but the bug went away this time and I was able to descend the two ladders into the vault containing the waterchip without any freezes. My only guess is that my previous save file was corrupted somehow and/or I did something in the game during that sequence which triggered the bug. I honestly have no idea but I'm just glad it worked the second time.
Oh yes, Fallout is known to corrupt saves sometimes. I was using the car in FO2 and suddenly when I arrived at some map, the car disappeared, I could only see the boot. Nevermind, I kept playing, saving the game as usual on all 3 slots I was using, loading back occasionally without issues (usually when stealing goes wrong :)).

I closed my game, went to bed. Next morning I tried to load my save, none of them worked, they all crashed. Since then I dare not to use the car, no matter how thoroughly it was fixed in a patch or not. I'm also backing up my save files per character and use all 10 slots, using about 6-7 major checkpoints throughout my game and cycling through the rest to be sure I've at least something to fall back to without having to start over.

Ahh, well that sucks man! Thankfully I have not had the game bug crash since I posted that but I always use all 10 saves when I play Fallout in spite of that. So are you playing Fallout 2 on a Mac or PC? I have Fallout 1 on the Mac but am skeptical to buy FO2 on GOG because people keep complaining about the slow lag input delay with the mouse controls (Mac version), meaning that the game runs sluggishly slow because of an OSX compatibility issue with the mouse. In FO1 it's fine because that game is DOS based and the Mac/GOG version just uses DOSBox, but since FO2 uses Wine (Windows based) apparently it's a whole different story and is alittle more complicated to get working properly. Do you know how I might be able to get Fallout 2 to work properly on Mac? I would really love to play that game!!

Cheers

Oh well, I haven't played FO2 the last couple of years, that's something I really need to rectify in the coming months. :)

I was always playing it on windows. It was working great on Win98 and WinXP, although for Vista I had to install sfall or high resolution patch, I'm not sure, I was experimenting with a bunch of workarounds and settings. Main issues were palette corruption (rainbow colours), video performance on full-screen fading effects and instantly skipping the game over / end of game slides without playing the audio. I'm not sure if I ever found a solution that fixed them all.

I don't have a Mac, and never tried it, but as you obviously don't need 3D acceleration for this game, it might be possible to run it inside a Windows XP virtual machine. Just a thought.

I see, well unfortunately I no longer own any windows based machines since I got rid of my desktop years ago (a laptop is really all I need these days, being a college student and whatnot) and I don't own the installation CD anymore for Windows XP. So am I SOL basically as far as getting FO2 to work properly on a MacBook Pro, or is there some feasable way that I could install this Windows XP virtual machine onto my Mac? Thanks for your help and input BTW, you sure seem to know your specs when it comes to the original Fallouts!

You don't use the car!?! Man that game would have driven me CRAZY if I didn't use the car - that's one of the biggest improvements in FO2 compared to FO1!

I've played it from start to finish multiple times using the RP 2.1.2b, and I'm now redoing it with the RP 2.2beta1. So far no issues like that.

Weird that ALL of the games crashed. Then again with RP you can use lots of slots (I think it's practically unlimited), which is recommended since F2 can still do strange things that you may need an earlier save to get back to.
