REALLY stupid question, but I just bought it, I'm loving it, but I'm curious if it is imparitive to kill EVERYTHING? Specifically the rats; seems like a waste of ammo. I know there are more nasty creatures later in the game, should I keep an itchy trigger finger? Thanks
No you don't have to kill everything. You can actually beat the game without killing anything.

You can ignore most rats but you get a little XP for them. XP is usually harder to find than ammo.

If you're healthy and want to save ammo you can use a melee weapon or fight unarmed, little damage will heal over time and you can use doctor and first aid (works even at very low values if you try often enough) to get additional XP.

Thanks. Sounds like Divine Divinity. Killing rats and rabbits always seemed silly until I realized each one was a tiny bit of XP. Kill enough small things and it becomes a nice sizable chunk of XP. Thanks again.
early in the game you'll want to conserve ammo, but rats are so weak that going stabby/slashy with your knife should pose no danger
later in the game ammo will no longer be a real problem

about the killing: many problems in the game can be solved without violence
I always used to have an offhand 10mm smg (in semi single shots mode) I'd use to dispose of the weak opponents and a primary good weapon to deal with the dangerous ones, save the better ammo. Upshot being, if the dangerous opponents get too close, the smg in burst mode can save the day.
I believe the game only has a few missions where you have to kill a bunch of things, and those are all geared at rad scorpions and bandits. I also think you quit seeing weaker enemies the further you get into the game.

Fallout 2 seemed to have a greater penchant for making the player wipe out mobs of geckoes/molerats/etc.
I know the question has been answered but also consider a murderer run and kill everything and everyone :-)

Nah, I do that everytime I play Mario Kart, and I'm looking for a change :)

Pretty much what I do as well. I love the 30 round mag for the SMG, I almost never have to waste AP reloading. I usually like a long range weapon in the other slot, usually the hunting rifle.

Actually both of those quests have non combat solutions, you just miss out on combat XP and loot.

Did anyone else do a playthrough with the one-handed trait?
I thought it was pretty fun. I was like a cowboy! ^^

You shouldn't waste ammo on the rats; it should be enough to just curb stomp them.

I always mix up the gameplay of 1, 2 and tactics.. but yeah!
What I really liked was fast shot and that one other perk giving extra fire speed.
Then take the Magnum, you can fire all 6 shots and reload on a single turn!

Not very effective late in the game when you'd need to hit the eyes, but fun.

That's what the Sniper perk is for. I did a few runs where I started with the Finesse perk, but after getting the Sniper perk I used Mutate to swap Finesse for Fast Shot. I was kind of like having the best of both worlds except for having to use up a perk on Mutate.
