I just got Fallout 1 and so I want to play it relatively 'vanilla' but I was wondering if there were any recommended mods or fixpacks.

I had a look at the Fallout MODs sticky but I'm not really sure what I want. I've installed the resolution mod but that's it.

EDIT:

I suppose the ones I was wondering about most were the dialogue fixes and the 'Fallout Update Mod v1.2.5'.

Honestly, you can probably just play it without any mods for a first playthrough. That's what I did, and I had a blast. The game was buggy on release but the GOG version is fully patched and actually fairly bug-free. Some people like the Fatal Damage mod but I wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough as it will affect balance (also I've never tried it myself).

Yeah, the description in the mods sticky made me think that wasn't for me (at least not this time round).

EDIT: Added more info to the first post.

You don't need any mods.
I even played the unpatched Version 1.00 and enjoyed it.
You might want to install the bloodpatch to remove the censorship.

I didn't realise there was any censorship (especially since there's a something on the options menu to do with violence/gore).

EDIT: I notice you're from Germany, perhaps the one you played was censored when the US version wasn't?

I don't know which FO1 version exactly is offered for download here. But since the uncensored FO2 version at this site was replaced with the censored european (UK) one I guess the same happened to Fallout1.

Oh no! When/why did they do that?

Does anyone know if the GOG version of F1 is censored or not?

EDIT: Ok, just found out that the kids are missing. I think I know why the GOG version is censored. The normal version of the game is 1.1, when they removed the kids for Europe, they made that 1.2. Because GOG use the latest official patch, this means no kids.

It's a good policy normally, but I wish they'd pay attention...

Unfortunately, most mods won't work with the European 1.2 version. (You'll have problems in Junktown ) Fallout update mod is quite nice but will only work with a 1.1 US version.

Basically, the only option you have is the resolution patch.

It was my understanding that there was a patch to fix the European version. What are the problems in Junktown you mention?

I must say that's something I tried a while ago ( on en EU disc edition , patched to 1.2). The game simply stuck , if I remember well upon entering junktown the second time. Also one quest there was impossible ( the one about an assassination )

I thought you had to patch it to turn it into the US version first and then you can apply other patches... you've got me worried now though, I haven't yet reached Junktown.

I think it's nevertheless well worth a try.

One thing changed since I last tried : there is now a 1.3.5 patch from the guys at teamX. I think I'll do a fresh install of my own now ;=)

In order to use the TeamX unofficial Fallout 1 patch or any other TeamX patches or mods you need to install their semi-official 1.2 patch. The latest versions also contains the children patch so it does not need to be installed separately.

TeamX patches and mods you may want to consider:
Fallout 1.2 Patch (semi-official) v. 1.2.1rc3
Fallout Unofficial Patch v. 1.3.5
Fallout NPC mod v. 3.5
No armor mod
Fallout Restoration Mod v1.0b1

Other mods:
sfall for Fallout 1
Fallout 1 High Resolution Patch v2.2b

You can find everything except Fallout Restoration Mod v1.0b1 from Petrell's Domain download section inside fallout directory. The restoration mod is available here. Be advised that the restoration mod restores the mutant invasion in full force and you may find settlements overrun by mutants as early as 90 day into the game and you have only 500 days to stop the invasion at which point mutants overrun Vault 13, ending the game.

Thanks for the info... do you have any recommendations though?

Well, I'd advice to use at least both semi-official patch and unofficial patch. Rest is pretty much optional. Unless you're up for hardcore gameplay I wouldn't recomment restoration project as it makes game truck loads harder. Note that fallout 1 sfall is archaid version and pretty much only provides mouse wheel and middle mouse button functionality.
