I watched it and I didn't see much more than that. They do have to avoid anomalies by throwing bolts, like the game, and there are dogs running around.

I guess the overall atmosphere is similar, but I felt like the film was a lot more abstract and a good chunk of it takes place in the strangest looking black and white aesthetic I've ever seen.

LazyAndroid: Ok, this is controversial.
It's not a post-apocalyptic setting, and I haven't even finished Fallout 1, but to me so far at least the mood is exactly the same: Once upon a time in the west.

While this is more about the building of a new civilization and not so much about adapting to the fall of civilization, both are points of transitions between the old and new and share a same status quo. Of course they also share common elements, like the dessert, gunslingers, technology that doesn't work anymore/yet, etc.

And on top, it's a very good movie, even if you don't agree that it fits the mood.

DOES anyone agree?
I agree, totally. Fallout 1 & 2 definitely have owe a debt to the Dollars trilogy--Fo2 especially, those who've played it know what I mean ;)--and by extension to "Once upon a Time in the West". Furthermore, most RPG games owe a debt to Kurasawa's samurai movies (Jojimbo, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress). The stories you see in those movies lend themselves to RPG games very well: the superhero fighter comes in to save the day, repeat.

So, apart from the setting, the themes and narrative fall into line quite well.

Burzujus: Threads nuclear war.
I just watched it last night. Damn it was great. I can definitely recommend this one.

greyhuntr: Watch "A Boy and His Dog" and "Tank Girl" and you can see a large number of similarities to Fallout. Right down to Malcom McDowall (President Eden) playing the villain out to control the water supply in Tank Girl.
A boy and his dog was the first movie that struck my mind when I read the topic. Great movie!
I just watched "Things To Come" by HG Wells. Its was released as a movie (and is set) in 1936 & foretells of WW2, only WW2 lasts 30 years & society has to rebuild itself. Not a Fallout-style movie from start to finish, but the utter decimation of society is there.
If you are willing to let quality slide a little, there are a hell of a lot of films from the eighties. Trying to find them these days may be hard though.

Hell Comes to Frogtown, City Limits, Steel Dawn (Patrick Swayze!), and a little bit older one is Damnation Alley. I'll post more as I remember them. I grew up hooked on these films. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm sure I'll remember a few more.
My local library doesn't have any of them. But I do remember Frogtown with Roddy Piper.
A boy and his Dog
Mad Max
Threads: Nuclear War (the best PA movie of all time, bar none no contest)

But we are forgetting that half of Fallout's appeal thematically is its black comedy, so for that i recommend

Dr. Strangelove
and... idk
Dr. Strangelove...sounds good AND my library has it!
Postman with Kevin Costner, I know that it received pretty bad critics but I liked it (in oppose to Waterworld which is also post-apocalyptic). And one which I really want to see when it will be released is The Day of the Triffids (planned for 2013). The book is really great!

Here's one that was filmed & released right around the same time as Dr. Strangelove...

Fail-Safe

Just wanted to say thank you for the excellent suggestions in this thread. I've ordered The Road to read having followed this thread.

My own suggestion, while not exactly Fallout-esque, but still roughly in the same field would be Planet Terror.

And thank you for the recommendation. My library has this, so I reserved it.

Also, I watched Fail-Safe & although the film itself is understandably dated, it carried a tremendous story.
I can't belive no one mentioned Fist of the north star.
Perhaps it's closer to the Fallout 2 setting when i come to think of it.
If you can bear watch it that is:

It's not a apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic movie, but The City of Lost Children is a GREAT movie. Maybe more of a steam-punk style. Lots of steam and gears etc.

The style/color of the movie fits Fallout perfectly IMO.

An outstanding movie that should be seen by everyone.

One of my favorite movies.
