I'm playing Fallout 1 on XP Pro 32-bit SP3. I have been playing without any problem until now. I completed the kill Gizmo quest in junktown, and from that point forward, can no longer save any games. I've been able to repeat this error -- can save before these events, not after. Any ideas?
A search online turned up the recommendation that I uninstall the game, delete any registry entries related to Fallout, and then reinstall, but before I did that, I wondered if there was an easier way. :o) Any ideas/tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

It seems to be a bug in the game. If you do reinstall after clearing everything off your computer, I would advise installing to a different directory as well.
Then when you go and do junktown again talk to the npcs and do their quests etc in a different order to what you did them orginally. Hopefully whatever bug has occured won't happen again. I can't say I had this problem and I killed gizmo myself as well.
make sure that antivirus is NOT running, I've seen some instances where antivirus was scanning the directory and because the file was in use, it could not save the game.

Thanks -- that seems to have done it!
awesome sauce!
Unfortunately I have to reopen this topic: I'm running Fallout 1 on Windows 7/64 bit.

I have exactly the same error and none of the steps mentioned here helped. I reinstalled and turned off the virus scanner, the error is still the same.

Any other ideas?
Oh well, I clutched one last straw and it helped. Simply run the game as admin and all is well. m)

Greetings, and I'm sorry for coming here after so many years, but I have to try to understand this...

I'm running the game in my PSP with DOSBox 0.71 and sometimes the game saves (really few times), and the majority of the times, it refuses to save and says the error of the title of this thread. I've tried everything that came to my mind and that I read on the Internet, but nothing worked, nd almost never I can save the game, which means I can't play it at all... Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be?? I don't think a program can be started in Administrator mode in MSDOS (please correct me if I'm wrong), nor I see any read-only permissions. Only in the save games folders that the game created. But it can't save in other slots too... It can only create the folder, but won't store the game in it..

Thanks in advance for any help/lead!
