I heard a lot of good things about Fixt, but I also heard that it is somewhat buggy, and the installation process is a nightmare for some people because they do it wrong.

I'm also in doubt about whether I should just get the patches OR the patches and bonus missions. I want the No Time Limit-option (VERY appealing for a completionist as myself), but I don't want to scroll down the customized section and see spoilers for quests I haven't completed or something, or get changes that overwrite the initial idea of the game.

Is the game completable with the standard patch that comes with the game? Or is it too buggy? Because I am wondering if I can do a first run without Fixt.

Thanks :D

Fallout is playable and completeable with just the official patches but the game is buggy in that state, so save often.
Any first time play through of any game should be vanilla.

FixT combines all the fixes and modifications into one combination to make the game less buggy and more enjoyable.

Also you have the option of picking what you want installed in FixT so if you just want unofficial patches then you can do so without extra content.
The time limit is 10 in-game years. I dont think anyone has ever legitimately ran out of time trying to do 'everything'.

Final patch was good enough, dont pay too much attention to veteran players who know every script by heart.

I might have managed that when playing the game for the first time...

You would be the only person iv ever heard who has done that. Impressive.
I forgot to ask you something.

If I just want the patches, but I want the bonus missions after my first run, how do I go about that? Do I have to reinstall Fixt?

Anyway, think I'm gonna take a first run without Fixt if the above is too difficult.
Just beware the glow.
You should backup your installation folder. Much easier to get rid of mods then.
Time limit is not 10 in game years, it's 150 days. You can extend it if you hire water merchants I think.

I'm also undecided on Fixt. I've played the game before, but still don't like to change too many things. I got the full custom installation, but when I can pick which to install, purist, half purist etc, it doesn't explain what the new content is. I've looked everywhere on the internet but can't find info. All it says is stuff like "all fixes with some new content" WHAT new content?
So I tried to use the custom installation, but I find the options confusing. Sometimes it doesn't say what is the vanilla option, and the questions and ways to checkmark sound confusing to me (I dont know if I leave something checked means a No or a Yes to the question). Meh.

The waterchip is 150 days but that is only the opening gambit. The real story only begins after you turn it in. Yes, there is another unseen time limit after the waterchip.

Which installation folder? Save folder? Fallout 1-folder? Fixt-folder? And how do I do it? Sorry, but I'm not the biggest PC-expert.

And btw, I think the 2nd time limiet was removed in the patch, but I am not sure. And please, no spoilers.
Sorry, I never even heard of it, so I thought you meant the main quest.

Make a copy of the whole Fallout folder you installed it to. Copy + Paste it wherever you want (mine's in the gog folder). Rename it Fallout_backup or whatever you like. I dont know if save files would work after patching/modding/unmodding, but at least it's easier to replace your game installation this way than having to download and install again everytime you want to mess with it.

I don't know about that at all, wouldn't you still need to uninstall Fallout 1 and Fixt?

But I guess it will save the installation of Fallout 1, although I don't want to mess with things too much.

I'll just try to complete the game with the standard patch, then make a second run with Fixt, sorta use it as an expansion pack. But I'm very concerned about the 1st time limiet, I don't like time limits in my games. Or if something goes bonkers, like the time limit or some huge bug, then I can just restart with Fixt, but I don't like restarting my games :(

Still, I know this is gonna be a masterpiece just by looking at the intro of Fallout 1 :)

Maybe I should be more clear: The 150 day time limit is for just one main quest. It is the very reason the story is happening at all. Think of it as a very complicated tutorial. Finish it to get a feel for the game and the game world, afterwards you are free to explore and grind XP. It is a pretty straight forward quest where you follow quite obvious clues as to where to go. Just do it first, then you can take your time with the rest.

Also, I want to give you a bit of a warning if you have some kind of completionist itch: You won't see everything the first time through the game. You won't even reach high levels unless you spoil your experience with a walkthrough (and hours upon hours of grinding random encounters for XP). On several occasions you will make choices that will lock you out of other things. Sometimes your character build locks you out of certain content. I believe it is possible to craft a perfect generalist character that can unlock all content, but you need to know what to do and in what order to do things because you will be doing so with specific pieces of gear and rare stat upgrades.

This really isn't a game where you should be ticking off boxes on a check list though. It is an organic roleplaying experience. Try and just enjoy the moments you have with the game, don't worry about what lies ahead or what you may have "missed". Not all content should be a part of your story, it wouldn't make much sense.

Edit: removed errenous claim that the Fixt mod does not remove the 150 day time limit. It appears from forum discussion that it has an option to change this value. Still, better just deal with it, changing it only makes sense if you're doing some experiment that does not involve following the story.

I think if you want to get rid of all the Fixt stuff you could just swap the clean backup Fallout folder you made with the Fallout folder you're using to play the game. Rename the backup folder to Fallout and substitute the Fixt Fallout with it (copy + paste it to gog installation folder, overwrite). I'm not 100% sure it works, but Fixt does ask you to make a backup.

I don't like it either, but it's not that bad. You can extend it, and continue playing after you finish it. Just make sure you save a lot and keep a few older saves (use a few different save files).

I'm still pretty undecided on what patch to install. When I looked at the list of bugs in Fixt, it was a long one. Meh.

When I played it as a kid, my cousin would always made characters with no luck so he could use points in other stats. And kill every single person and npc in a few towns (dont recommend it).

Unfortunately, I am a competionist, but I guess I will just do a GOOD-run and a BAD-run and then read about the rest. That should be a good start.
