Hi there, I own the Mac version of Fallout 2 (NOT the GOG version since I heard too many complaints of the game running slow from people on these forums who bought it for OS X) and currently my version is 1.02. When I try to apply Killaps unofficial patch, it says in the readme file that I know the patch is working if I can find this rock behind Klint in the beginning of the game (entrance to Temple of Trials) and highlighting said rock will show list of changes in the lower left screen display. The readme says to simply copy and paste the patch000.dat file into the GameData file under the "Contents" folder for FO2. I've done this and it made no difference and still boots the game up with the regular 1.02 patch...

So after that failed attempt I looked into getting the FO2 Restoration Project to work since that and the unofficial patch were both under the "download" section of killaps web page. I had no idea how to get that to run either as there were no instructions anywhere in the readme file to get it to work on Mac.

So I'm not the most computer savvy person out there but I think these patches/mods would really enhance the Fallout 2 experience for me. Is there anyone out there who might be able to help me out with atleast getting the unofficial patch to work? Again mine is not the GOG version so I'm not using Wine or any wrappers to my knowledge...

Thanks all.

You're out of luck; neither the unofficial patch or the restoration project work on the mac version of FO2. I'm pretty sure the res patch doesn't either, which is what often causes peoples performance problems when they turn the res up a few notches too high.

Running the windows version with WINE or similar (e.g. the GOG mac version) is the only way to use those mods on the mac.

Edit: Actually, looking at killaps website, he does have a 3 year old version of the unofficial patch available that used to work on macs. The restoration project still wont work, but that old patch version should have. I'd suggest checking the unofficial patch NMA thread to see if there's anyone else trying to use the mac version. Looks for posts around the second half of 2010.

Eh, that just sounds too cumbersome for me to pursue any further, so thank you for saving me the trouble! I think Fallout 2 is fine without the unofficial patch anyway after playing it some more, I just hated seeing Sulik still look like a half naked tribal when I equipped him with power armor and I heard killaps patch actually shows your NPC allies with the armor you equip them with. I'm finicky like that I guess, but it also goes to show that with another year of development time, Fallout 2 really could have been the best game ever and fans wouldn't even have to bother implementing this stuff. I refuse to shell my money on the GOG (Mac) Fallout 2 since too many complaints have gone around here in regards to the laggy mouse input and the game running sluggishly slow, so to speak. Sure the restoration mod, or unofficial patch may easily fix this issue but I'm not going to pay for something that doesn't work properly out of the box... Just no.

If I ever get my hands on a PC again then I will happily buy Fallout 2 from this site, but I know deep down it is an unnecessary gamble when I already have the game running smoothly on my Macbook Pro. Infact it actually runs way better than Fallout 1 from GOG (and I've yet to experience Fallout 2 crashing which happens semi frequently in FO1), but that is probably due to the fact that Fallout 1 from GOG uses the DOSBox CPU and considering that Fallout 1 was one of the last DOS games ever made I can understand why loading times and overall game performance runs as slow as it does. Guess in the meantime I will have to put up with the vanilla Fallout 2 from 1998, and that I can live with lol.

EDIT: So I got the killap unofficial patch (for mac) to work! It was really easy to get working (just had to open the "show package contents" tab under Fallout 2 app and place the patch000.dat file under the "GameData" folder inside the "Resources" folder. apparently I just failed to realize that I was using the patch the whole time lol
