n8mahr: i am shure now that the hi-res pack causes the screen to flicker. when in hi-res mode, the screen flickers. it does NOT matter, which resolution i choose. 800x600 or 1280x1024 or ..., it all flickers.
i tried using ddraw.dll from timeslip and even deleting the ddraw.dll; it makes no difference... this is so sad..

Robmonster: I have this exact same issue.
If I only install the High-res patch, the program doesn't run up, saying that it failed to initialize video at 640x480. If I install the sfall patch as well then the program runs at a lovely high resolution, but there is a black flicker over the game, even in the menu screens.
It's running at my LCD's native resolution, I cannot work out what's wrong. I've seen an 'unofficial' patch by TeamX, which takes the game to version 1.34 or something. I'm considering applying it to see if it helps.
Rob

yes, it sounds exactly like my problem.
please let me / us know if you find a solution to this!
perhaps an issue with the graphics card? you do not own a gf7900 gt, do you?

No, an ATI X1950
I've tried all the fixes here for the HI-RES mod but none works...
is it because i have Windows XP 64?
Just installed HighRes Patch version 1.3. It makes splash screens and videos fullscreen, and supposedly does some other stuff. I just finished my first run through the game using the last version, which was mostly great (Had to drop the res back to 1024X768 because I couldn't read a darn thing at 1280x800.)
For some reason, it's taking for-freaking-ever to draw the splash screens fading up and down... not sure if it's the patch's fault, or if it has more to do with all the other crap I'm trying to run at the same time that I'm trying this. (Encoding a DIVX vid for my wife, downloading Fallout 2 from GOG, updating podcasts in iTunes...)
More testing needed... will report in later.
EDIT: It WAS all the extra crap I had going. The patch works great, for F1 and F2.

hi@all,
as posted above, i had a problem with flickering screen when using the hires patch.
i was unable to fix it, but since i bought myself a new video card (ati4850) yesterday, i wanted to give this game another try.
and w/o PROBLEMS so far; the flickering screen problem only appeared on my old video card (nvida gf7900) . yes :)
I don't get it. I played the game as soon as I downloaded it. Then I followed these steps and applied the resolution/engine patches, and played it. The game looks exactly, 100% the same. What's the point of these patches? I wish someone could provide a screenshot of what the game is supposed to look like?

matthewmw64: My guide on fixing the Black screen glitch on Vista when using the Full Res patch.
May I now present my Guide to getting the Res patch to work on Vista.
With special thanks to Rainstorm and 404notfound.
1. Install Fallout as normal.
2. Download the Resolution Patch (http://nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=download&file_id=739)
3. Download the FO1 Engine Fix (http://timeslip.chorrol.com/sfall.html) Its the one for XP/Vista.
4. Install the Resolution Patch following the instructions and then the same for the Engine Fix
5. DO NOT change the graphics part of the DDraw.ini file. You will not be able to do anything at the main screen.
6. Rename the falloutw.exe to something else. (Update shortcuts if necessary)
7. Enjoy!
That should work. Please note that I've not had much time to play after figuring this out so the black out problem could still reoccur. Let me know of it does.

when you have applied the patches correctly, you can play the game in almost any resolution you want. for example 1280*1024.
the game simply looks better overall and you can see more of the area compared to when you play @ 640*480.
you will notice (and like) the differences as soon as you start it, believe me :)
perhaps you have to edit some of the .ini files to make it work;
try reading the readme.txt that came with the patches to understand how they work!
This does need a sticky. Helped me out greatly with my issue!
Hello, using the instructions above I was able to up my resolution; but I'm still getting the problem mentioned by a few people on the first page. The game is playing relatively slowly, I have 4 gigs ram and a fast processor so it's not that, does anyone know of any fix or should I just run at native resolution in a window if the slowness is a bother?

Did you move ddraw.dll or delete that file? That should solve your problem.
yeah, I did that. even worse, whenever I try to change the resolution it crashes, and I don't even see an option for making the game windowed. I used all the links in this thread, too
edit: also, task manager is saying that the game's using 50 percent cpu, so one of my cores pretty much completely

here, as you can see I renamed the file that supposedly kills the slowness, but it still is using a ton of CPU just in the menu. also, in the instructions at the top of the page why does the poster refer to the first file as the resolution fix, when the link he provides is to a download that just ads content that wasn't in the game, it doesn't do anything to the resolution. did he just get his links confused? can someone provide a definitive solution to this problem,?

Are you trying with the latest version of the high-res patch, 2.2?

I forgot about this, sorry. But yes, I am using the most recent version.
A correct link for the FO1 engine fix please!!
