I just recently finished Fallout 1 and now grabbed Fallout 2 on the sale, would anyone speak out in favor or against using the restoration mod on my very first playthrough?

I personally wouldn't use i ton my first playthrough. It adds its own content and some of it just doesn't feel like Fallout 2. While some of it fits perfectly with the story, most of it was left out for a reason and even with the greatness of the restoration project some parts of the content just don't fit right in or are poorly implemented (gameplay and story wise)

So use the unofficial fan patch or play it vanilla for your very first run and after your first or second playthrough go with the restoration mod.

The reason most of it was left out was because the developers didn't have enough time to implement it all, due to being rushed by their publisher at the time.

The quests added by the RP are, in my opinion anyway, mostly in line with the rest of Fallout 2 - at least in the latest version (2.2). It's apparently in-line with what the original devs wanted, and I think the original devs gave some feedback to the project at some point (although I can't find where that is now). More details here:

http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Killap%27s_Fallout_2_Restoration_Project

Beware that some of the above link may include spoilers if you read too far down the page though!

You also don't need to visit the additional new locations if you don't want to, but since it actually fixes some pretty glaring bugs (over and above the fan-made patch), I recommend it. One of the fixes is that combat works properly (with respect to ammo types), so it's worth it from that standpoint alone, at least in my view.

At the very least, grabbing the fan-made patch is worth it - it doesn't add anything, just fixes MOST bugs (but not as many as the RP).

I forgot to put an 'IMHO' after my opinion ;P

For me at least it was somewhat breaking the immersion at certain points and I liked it more, when some of the things were just left ambiguous. Not saying anything specific, since it involves a lot of spoilers, but anyone who played the restoration project, should know what I am talking about.

I totally and absolutely agree with your point made about the bug-fixing and the ammo, but it just doesn't feel like Fallout 2 to me without a little bug here and there. None of the gamebreaking ones of course....
In the end it just comes down to personal taste, I guess.

Fair enough. To me, FO2 already didn't really feel like the original Fallout anymore anyway. Although it's a better game overall (better party management for one thing, more sidequests for another), it felt more "light" in many ways. Probably because of the many areas where the game didn't take itself seriously - not normally a bad thing, but it seemed a bit out of place the way it was handled.

I get there are two locations in particular that may reveal certain things, but I don't mind having loose ends tied up or plot points explained, and I think they did so pretty well. The other location was kind of pointless though.
I just went to the RP site and tried to download the v2.2 but I get a security warning from my Firewall/Virus protection software that says "VIPRE has determined that the site
you are trying to visit contains potentially harmful or objectionable content." and is labeling it as a Bad Website.
Is there a problem at that website with a virus? If no one else is having the problem I can just go in and change my Firewall setting but I just want to be sure. Thanks

If you mean the "No Mutants Allowed" site, I just went there and it was fine. Also the direct link to Killap's site is also fine: http://www.killap.net/fallout2/expansion/2.2/F2_Restoration_Project_2.2.exe.

It's probably available in a ton of places now though, so if you're really worried, a quick web search should probably steer you to a site your virus checker doesn't chuck a tizzy over...

Ok probably just my virus software. The website comes out ok but as soon as I try to download it gives me the stupid message. I will try some other sites to see if it continues to happen. If so then I know it's just Vipre doing overkill on the download.
The keyword in the warning message is "potential". I can always override it or tell my Firewall it's ok. and then scan the program before running it.
Thanks for your input.
Good news for Mac OS X players: I've updated F2RP Vault-Tec wiki with instructions how to make GOG's version play well with F2RP.

I've tested it on my MacBook Air with 10.9, and it's worked just well, without any glitches.

Excellent, thanks much... :)
Is the GOG version modded at all? I think it already comes with sfall but I'm not sure...
I always seem to have problems making the megamod work.
is there a way Gog can as an option issue a FO2 download that already includes the Megamod as part of its download.

Fo2 w/ MM ready to run just unzip?

I'd pay extra....
I just wanted to pint out that
the Restoration Project is at v 2.2 now
includes both killap's Unofficial patch and High rez patch
