I've been stumbling through this game and I've made it to the cave where deathclaw hangs out. Does anyone have any advice as to how to take him on?
Thanks.
Are you talking about the first game with the missing caravans quest? This is not really a hard fight. There is only one deathclaw and he has around 225-250HP. If you have plenty of health and armor then you can go toe to toe with the most powerful weapon in your inventory. Otherwise I suggest using a fast weapon and do the old "hit n' run" maneuver. Let him use up his AP to close the distance, attack once then run away and repeat.
Failing that, aim for the eyes, hope for a critical, reload.
Think it says in the game to go for the eyes - do a targeted shot with your best weapon and hopefully not get eviscerated in the process :D
In some circumstances it can be worth it to target the legs and then move back. If you can cripple a leg it'll slow the deathclaw and give you more time for shots to the eyes.
Oh, and in dark areas like the cave, a lit flare makes the area not so dark, improving shots.
In theory anyway, haven't measured if or how well it actually works.
I beat it with Tycho and Ian accompanying my shotgun-toting VD. With 100%+ small guns skill, kept going for eyeshot criticals. 3-4 of those and it was dead, using stimpaks as necessary to heal.
You can also blow up the cave entrance, near the cave entrance. (Or was it for the radscorpion cave near Shady Sands, can't remember that well anymore)
Ok cool. Thanks all.
Oh man, I remember the first time I played, I got creamed by the Deathclaw because I'd taken the trait that means you can shoot fast, but can't target locations, so I couldn't go for the eyes. Plus, I only had a pistol, so I just wasn't hurting the thing much at all.
Ah, memories.

Yeah that's exactly what I did the first time around so I had to start over because that definitely wasn't working
I have the fast shot trait. Beast most with that trait. works great on unarmed builds because all your punches cost only 2 AP. That with the T-51b Power Armor, 10 Str and Agi, power fist, and accompanying perks. WHEW! No need to aim for the eyes. Just wail on them until they die and move to the next target. lol

In you situation I'd go find the gun runners in the boneyard. Sell all the crap off, pick up a decent weapon or armor, and have some fun.

Edit: I'm level 2 (or was, 3 now) with Combat Armor and a Power Fist. XD Just go around finding items and sell them at the Gun Runners early on. You can have an end game weapon within a few hours of starting a new char.
