I really enjoyed those Dark Alliance games as well. They weren't valuable contributions to the BG series story-wise and really didn't seem to need to be BG games at all, but they were fun to play and that's often good enough.

With that enjoyment in mind I gave BoS a go, hoping for a fun romp a la the BG console games, in a Fallout-ish setting.

So they completely miss the point on the setting. None of the witty dialogue, none of the humour, just "RAR GRAR ME BIG BADASS DUDE OR LADY WIFF GUNS N STUFF!" with the occasional "look at how edgy I'm being over here!" swear word.

And the gameplay is just lousy. Nothing like the fun of the BG games, which of course makes the terrible writing and environment mentioned above all the more noticeable. The problem with the game isn't that it's nowhere near as fun as the other Fallout games (like you say, they exist and are still there regardless of this nonsense), it's that it just isn't fun at all. It's anti-fun.

KingCrimson250: I know it gets a ton of hate dumped on it for butchering the series.

But, I'm a long-time Baldur's Gate fan (got the original shortly after it came out and have played the trilogy umpteen times since) and I actually quite enjoyed the Dark Alliance games. The key is, I went into them with the expectation of it being a hack-and-slash action RPG. Never saw any tie-in with the PC games, and heck, for all intents and purposes, I never considered it a Baldur's Gate game at all. Because of that, I could enjoy it.

So it seems that BoS is a similar kind of game, so I'm asking: Is the game any good if you imagine that it's got nothing to do with the Fallout series? Like, is the reason it's hated on because it's not what Fallout is about, or because it's actually a bad game? If it's the first one, I can handle it. When I want Fallout, I can play Fallout, and BoS being a big departure from that isn't a big deal, to me. Like with Dark Alliance, I can mentally write that "Fallout" out of the title and just enjoy the game as "Brotherhood of Steel."

Fun fact: Apparently the reason why the Dark Alliance games were a part of the Baldur's Gate series was because of a loophole. Interplay had lost the rights to the D&D license but not the Baldur's Gate license, so they were free to make D&D games so long as they had the name "Baldur's Gate" in the title. Of course, I'm sure the free marketing didn't hurt, either.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. That's a bit of a shame, but good to know.
I actually quite enjoyed it and played all three characters through to the end. But then I played it first before 1 or 2 and didn't know a thing about all the hubbub surrounding it. It was a fun, mindless hack n slash like the Baldaur's Gate DA, Diablo, and Champions of Norath. I think I liked it more because I played it in Iraq when I was deployed and had nothing but time to kill.

But anyway, I think it is possible to like it and the others. I loved the Dark Alliance games AND games like normal Baldur's Gate and Temple of Elemental Evil (which I also recommend). Is it worth playing? Well you could probably get it for cheap. Why not? Just dont expect much in the way of story. If you are looking for a game that will satisfy your jones for a game like DA then go for it.
Long time ago i played in it (it was like tactics boom), but some bug stumbled me so i abandoned it.
I rather liked it, mostly 'cause u can have wide variety of characters in your group and for pretty fallout-styled-2d-graphics (and SPECIAL, and same skills).
Now, i'll try again.

That's odd. I remember Brotherhood of Steel for the PS2 a little differently. Three characters available, no 2D Fallout style graphics but rather a 3D world seen over your character's shoulder, and I don't remember SPECIAL in it.

They really, really should have taken the extra 15 minutes to conjure up a name for Fallout BoS that wasn't already used by Fallout Tactics BoS.
Maybe Brotherhood of Tin?

Know about PS2 BoS close to nothing.... >_>

Understandable, but you should probably read the replies first if they aren't more than a page long. And at least the first page, at that. Might save you some trouble.

MackieStingray: Sounds like you might be talking about Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, not the PS2 game Brotherhood of Steel.

Vel_Grozny: I never knew there was a game Fallout: BoS (without Tactics. That's one confusing title....
Thanks for clearing that up.
I was also shocked by the replies here (having recently bought 'Tatics' and am still playing my way through Fallout 2 (Fallout 1 I found to be an amazing gaming experience which did not over stay its welcome).

Glad they are all talking about a diferent game.
