I load the game up and it exits to the desktop. I can click on the icon again to get it to run for another 2 seconds before dumping me out again. I tried disabling items, running as admin, changing compatibility, and nothing will work.
Well, I'm on Windows 7, so I guess it's not officially supported on this OS. I guess I'll just wait a couple of years for it to get fixed on here.

Does the launcher itself crash, or does the game crash when you click on Play in the launcher?
If the latter, I assume you've tried every single option in Setup - including resolution and disabling sound?

The launcher is fine. When it's playing the movie, it exits me back to the desktop. I can alt-tab or click on the icon to get back in for about a second or two. I have played with every setting, set CPU affinity, etc. and I can't get it to stop dumping me back to the desktop. Maybe it has something to do with the movie codec? I just don't know what else to do.

Well, I got it running, but it was a pain.
I had to disable visual themes, desktop composition and display scaling on high DPI settings. I am running in Win95 compatibility mode, but I'm not sure if any of the other ones will work. I also run the program as an administrator. CPU affinity doesn't seem to matter. I haven't played with the resolution settings, so it looks like trash. Once I finally got it started up, I needed to unplug my controller, which was a problem in another thread. Then, I can put my controller back in and setup the buttons. After that, everything seems to be fine. Sometimes, on start-up, it still kicks me back to the desktop, but I can click the icon again to get back in the game.

I have Windows 7 and a GeForce 9600GT and the same thing happened to me, but only when trying to start the game for a second time. After I restarted the computer everything was fine, although sometimes clicking repeatedly on the game in the taskbar fixed the issue. None other steps were required.
Disabling multiple monitors allowed the game to run normally for me.
For what it's worth, using Win7, and the game starts fine if you select a non-widescreen resolution at the setup menu. A little annoying to do this every time, but at least it works.

This worked for me, although it's not a fix to bne forced to run 16:9 @ 4:3 with huge black borders running down each side of the screen.

This needs to be fixed.

Well, this is a 4:3 game. So the black bars on the sides are the way it's meant to be played :)

You can stretch it with your graphics driver in the scaling options, but then everything that' round will be oval and everything stretched horizontally.

Take your Acorn BBC Micro "mode" nostalgia somewhere else. ;-)

Seriously though... I know.
I don't use the alternative scaling methods, and demand 1:1 pixel aspect to allow and see the res that each app "thinks" it is displaying in - whether or not the app itself cheats by using its own "stretch" for offered resolutions.
I am on Windows 10 and the game doesn't seem to remember the graphics settings and none of the settings I use make the game work. It exits with a 'can't create' dialog and exits.

I've tried all of the suggestion and I still get the error to either close the program or debug. Any ideas?

I tried it with dgVoodoo 2 a while ago, which worked for me.
Been years since the last time I played this game.
Downloaded using Galaxy Client then tried playing...it crashed to desktop without any message.
Changing compatibilty setting of game executables made no difference
Changing resolution to a 4:3 one neither
Tried every setup option ...even disabling audio
Same goes for changing windows dpi setting and theme to a basic one (non aero)
Even tried a 5 years old backup of the game installer

Maybe there's something wrong with the forceware drivers I'm using
Just for kicks I tried it on w10 (same pc).Game worked (os had to install direct play) straight out the box.
Maybe the issue is due to the 3rd party antivirus I'm using on Seven
