The version of Evil Genius sold / shipped by GOG.com has a problem.

It is the unpatched v1.0 with a No-CD crack installed.
An official version 1.01 patch was released.
A lot of the v1.0 crashing problems are fixed by the update.

Read the Patch Notes / Readme in the update. Patch version is shown in the Options Menu / InGame.
No Version Number Displayed = Version 1.0

Why is GOG.com shipping v1.0?

NOTE:

I have the CD retail / box version. I archived the official version 1.01 update.
I hate the SecureROM / DRM hassles.

no, but thanks for the reply.

I do have the unofficial v1.1 patch archived as well.

It is the .exe that is not the correct version.

I guess that no 'No-CD' cracks were published for v 1.01 ( the official patch ).

Why doesn't it help? In that thread there is a GOG staff member (blue text) stating that the GOG version is patched with 1.01. The unofficial 1.1 patch does help the game, though, so it is recommended.

No offense meant.
If you check the game version in the game itself, you will understand that it is not version 1.01.
Look in the Options Menu, bottom left hand corner.
If you have NO number showing, its version 1.0.

The 'Retail / CD Set' shipped version 1.0 . I have it and I did do a check against it.
Also check the date of the .exe ( binary ) . Version 1.0 and version 1.01 have different dates.

GOG may have patched the other files, but the .exe ( binary ) is version 1.0.

The unofficial patch requires the .exe ( binary ) to be version 1.01.
Check the readme.txt included with it.
Lots of things break if you use it with version 1.0 .

I did find a version 1.01 'NoCD' crack online. Dropped it in the Retail CD install patched to version 1.01 .
It does show the correct version number ( 1.01 ) in the options menu.
It works quite well.

Still puzzled why GOG is shipping the v1.0 binary .....

You'll have to take this up with GOG support then. I applied the unofficial 1.1 patch with no problems whatsoever.
Just want to thank this post original creator, iivZubhKAqozGeXv which clear my confusion before the next 1.1 unofficial fan patch.

One of the easy way to recognize 1.01 vs 1.0 (based on the official patch note) is you can see the load and save instead of load save as well as version# in option menu. but in GOG version it is not.

I believe it is not the true 1.01 from GOG then.

Thanks for the no 1.01 CD crack idea - I will search for it as the solution of manual applying the 1.01 patch.
The only thing is I feel a bit weird for doing that... since I purchase a legal copy.

Update:
iivZubhKAqozGeXv or gog team ,

I don't have retail CD (only purchase here),
Are we able to have no cd 1.01 on top of GOG version after 1.01 patch? seems like not working for me

update 2:
Not to confuse everyone, Found this thread, guess it is because of GOG using EU version and not US version, therefore all bugs are fixed prior to that and the difference between the 2 versions are only cosmetic ones when US version being patched

I just installed / dropped in the V1.01 No CD Crack on the GOG.com installed files.

That was the only file regressed when GOG.com applied the V1.0 No CD Crack. All other files are the official V1.01 patch files.

Work great. And did solve a lot of crashes.

You can if you want, install the Unofficial / Fan Made Patch V1.1 on top of all this. It doesn't touch the game binary.
Right, lets get this sorted. Ignore anythign about "Unofficial" patches, as i'm only talking about the official ones here.

There were only ever 2 versions of Evil Genius, the US one and the EU one. BOTH have SEPERATE patches to update each to 1.1.

The EU one as originally relased (from the CD) is NOT automatically version 1.1. You still need to apply the EU 1.1 patch to update that to version 1.1.

This is because while the EU 1.0 release has SOME fixes compared to the US 1.0 release, it still needs the additional official EU 1.1 patch to fix it fully. My guess is that GOG have the EU 1.0 release, which still needs the EU official patch to bring it up to 1.1. Simple!

As an example, BOTH the US 1.0 and EU 1.0 releases should still say "LOAD SAVE" instead of "LOAD AND SAVE". The Official 1.1 patch will fix this issue.

So, uh, are these patch files lost forever or what?

Also, I thought the discussion was about official 1.01, not official 1.1... So I'm actually still confused.
