Well totally new to this but wanted to jot down what I learned as simple tips that really help you out.
1.TAB key brings up the equipment menu + builds a new item, the arrow builds enhancements (upgrades) to existing ones.
2.Toggle off the cockpit (V key by default) to get a better field of view.
3.Scattergun is short range has a long charge-up time and unless you really practice at it, you are probably better off with the Gatling.
4.The default weapons on your starter ship are pretty good.
5.Play Easy difficulty to learn the basics...play normal so you can farm enemy fighters for fuel.
6.BUY perks: Bump up your credit gather, and jump fuel capacity first. Energy capacity a bit but don't max it early. Scanner helps too...but you find out what's there once you jump in anyway...
7.Ancients have a 'gotcha' move if you are lucky and good enough to take one down. I managed to figure out the puzzle, trigger it and beat one the first time...only to have the 'HAH HAH' move get me. Get out of the area.
8.If you are really desperate for fuel...the Okkar fighters that warp in when you linger have some.
9.Your short range scanner to find stuff is not as good as the Mk. 1 eyeball. Fly into big asteroids, wrecks and keep an eye open for crates.
