So, I bought EU1 from GOG a few days ago. I noticed that the game wouldn't start on Windows 10, unless you delete the faulty winmm.dll. But this resulted in the music not working (sound effects still work, but not music). It's taken a few days of digging, but I found a proper solution. First, install the game.

Then download this file:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=23188390292219039574

The name of the file is X-WingMusicFix.zip. It's for another game but it works. Extract all files from the zip into the EU1 game folder, except XWING95.EXE. Delete the original winmm.dll file, then rename win32.dll to winmm.dll (IMPORTANT or this won't work). Launch the game, you'll see that the background music works as well as sound effects.

But I couldn't stop there. I have an NVIDIA GTX 1080, and I wanted to be able to play this game at my monitor's max resolution of 3840x2160 (4K). So after more digging, I download dgVoodoo 2 (http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_54.zip).

Extract that zip into the game folder. Copy all the files from the MS folder into the game folder (once again, IMPORTANT). Then run dgVoodooCpl.exe as administrator. Select the button that says ".\" (to the left of the Add button). Then go to the DirectX tab. Set VRAM to max (for best game performance). Set resolution to the max your monitor is capable of (or whatever else you want). Then click apply and close the app. Now run the game, you'll see that it runs at the res you selected. You'll know it is working if you see the dgVoodoo watermark in the lower left of the screen (this can be disabled by running dgVoodooCpl.exe).

I really do wish GOG would consider incorporating both of these solutions into the official installer, and marking the game as Windows 10-compatible.

That's all, enjoy!

Just wanted to say thank you! Not only does the sound now work but I can play the game in 2560x1440. Granted the graphics are still old but it looks sharper and clearer for sure! Also, I did notice that the zip was flagged as having malware but I scanned it with three different programs and they all came bag negative.
I also wanted to thank you for the music fix, that's been driving me nuts, but the dgvoodoo solution only stretches the resolution and makes it (to my eye) look terrible, I'd rather keep it at its original aspect ratio. Thanks again for fixing the music!
The .dll cheat does help but there's smthn's wrong with the voodoo stuff - no result at all. Stretched low-res.

Care to upload it again?
Pretty please?
@tomexplodes: dgVoodoo does also have an option to not stretch the image, you can also configure it to keep the original aspect ratio. But then you might have to deal with black bars.

@Severjan: If that is what is happening, then dgVoodoo is working as it is supposed to, I think. You followed all instructions to the letter?

@victorchopin: Yes, it does look like the file link has been deleted everywhere. I did not create the file, I only linked to it. Fortunately for you, I keep a copy of it on an external hard drive, because I'm a digital packrat, LOL.

Hi,

1. So GOG version of EU1 contains the six tracks background music? The GamersGate version doesn't so I just want to confirm this before I buy the game. I have the original CD (which was AFAIK until now, the only way to get the background music playing) but I don't have DVD player anymore and is reluctant to buy one just to replay this game.

2. I'm currently running on Windows 7, do I need to do the same thing as you've outlined for Windows 10?

Regards.
@molosser: I don't know about the soundtrack. I still own this game on retail CD but it doesn't work with Windows 10, GOG version does. But yeah, since it's GOG, it probably does have the soundtrack bundled with the download.

You can get a cheap USB DVD drive from a store for less than $20. Just rip the disc into ISO format, mount it, drop the soundtracks into the folder where they're supposed to go, might work. I have a $5K gaming laptop that is super thick but doesn't have a disc drive, I didn't want one, 2 video cards or an extra SATA3 SSD are more worthy expansion options. But I do keep an external disc drive around on the off-chance I'll need to use a disc. It's useful to have around if you have old disc games.

I'm not sure if the fixes are needed for Windows 7, I haven't used that OS in a few years, even though it's my favorite overall. Try without them, and only use them if they are needed.
