While trying to decide whether to purchase Comanche vs. Hokum, I tried the official demo from years ago. It ran fine except that it refused to work properly with my joystick. In researching the problem, I found lots of posts on combatsim.com from ten years ago describing the exact problem I'm having and claiming that this was happening not just for my joystick model but for users of many different USB joysticks.
Here are links to just two of the discussions I found on the subject:

I also found a few places online that referred to a fan-made patch, referred to as the "x-patch", which claims to fix the USB joystick problem, but I doubt that patch works with the GOG version (it's a modified .EXE file and when I tried using it with the demo it complained that it couldn't find the game CD).
Sorry for the long explanation. Obviously my questions is: does the GOG version solve this problem or is there a chance it will also have problems with my joystick? (The fact that I don't see posts in here complaining about this problem is encouraging, but I still thought I should ask.)

Hmm, haven't read the threads linked, but
I have Vista 64 and the USB joystick Thurstmaster Flight stick X, (the PC/PS3 edition)
It works.
The stick works, the throttle works, the buttons 1 (fire), 2, 4 work. The hat switch work. The rest of the buttons do not work.

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I have an x52 using the newest drivers and profiler software, on Vista Ultimate 32 bit and have no problems. I should add that I am also running the EECH All-Mod (http://www.eechcentral.com/), so if that included any USB fixes that could be it. I highly recommend the all-mod either way ;)
Good luck!
I have the original game from years ago and I experienced joystick and graphic issues when I installed and played it on Vista, so I gave up. It wasn’t until GOG and $5.99 that I downloaded it and I’m back on the Comanche warpath, I get great 1280X1024 resolution on my widescreen that is unsurpassable, and my Logitech USB Extreme 3d Pro works better then it did in the old days. So quit trying to look for solutions when you have already found it. Pay the $5.99, and download the Russian Kicking Comanche. Hope this helped.
I'm using an old Logitech Wingman Force 3d, any advice on how to configure it to play well with EE?
edit: Sorry for the broken post, got a phone call from my boss.

If you haven’t already done so go to www.logitech.com website and get the current joystick drivers. Also if you are running any other type of controller you might have to disable them in the device drivers in the device manager, my father couldn’t use his logitech joystick if his steering wheel was active.

Sorry, I waited for it to go on sale...
I'm happy to report that the GOG version of Comanche vs. Hokum plays fine with my Microsoft Force Feedback 2 joystick.

Well bugger. Did you have trouble changing the controls around? I have the same model joystick and GoG versions of both eeah and eech and in apache/havoc there are no problems at all with the throttle, hat and buttons 1 & 2 but in com/hokum I can't change the cyclic or a few other controls.
