So I'm trying to help out the Black cleaning floors on Level 3 who was unfairly maligned as a food-thief, and to do so I need to break into the ventilation shaft in the nearby restroom so I can spy on the adjacent kitchen. I purchased Lockpicking from the skill tree, and the ventilation shaft does only require Level 1 Lockpicking. But it also requires an Ability Rank of 15, and I'm only on Level 1. How do I increase me Ability Rank?

Do I have to increase it through use on other locked items? If so, I don't have enough lockpicks for that, and I'm not sure there are enough locked items in the base to get me from rank 1 to rank 15.

You have to get LVL 2 Lockpicking from your ability points. If you look the description of the abilities there's a note at the bottom what ability rank you'll get. ;)

LOL, that's very bizarre, I don't know why they wouldn't just say the shaft required a level 2 lockpicking skill, but thanks a lot, that answers my question!

As far as I can tell, lockpicking skill (levels 1-3) adds to your lockpicking ability (1-100, potentially).

level 1 = skill 1 (you can do lockpicking, but not very well)
Level 2 = skill 15
Level 3 = something else... not sure.

You can use tools to boost your skill. For example, if you use a lockpick (click it from your belt), it will boost your skill by 5. There are other tools that boost your skill by more. Tools eventually break and/or are consumed on use, depending.

Similar tools exist for bashing locks, hacking, etc.
