hello,
when i start the game the intro works fine but when the start menue shows up i get a black screen.
i can hear the menue sound, clicking with the mouse works also.
i press esc and game close. sometimes my nvidia driver must recoverd by windows.

the only way to get the game working is to check the "start game in 640x480 resolution" option und compability mode.
but i cant change the resolution later in game. so i must play in 640x480 thats frustrating.

also try the widescreen patch but it doesnt work.

hope anybody can help.

A blank screen on the main menu is always a symptom of having an overlay running: the most common one is Shadowplay. Disable it before opening Emperor and the problem should be resolved.

thank you so much!
solved the problem.
I also get the black screen when I put the game in the background and bring it back to the foreground. I found I could fix this by causing the screen to refresh with a hotkey (such as pressing ESC).

So I figured out what shadowplay was. It turns out I do not have shadowplay running since it says something along the lines of "Not ready".

What other "overlays" are there? I actually have another variation of this problem where I get past the menu, which is black but the buttons are showing up at least, but when I am playing on a map, it runs at 1024x768. If I go to the display menu and choose 1024x768, it does not change its resolution.

When I run the game normally, without choosing NVidia as its main gpu (even though I defaulted the .exe to NVidia), it seems to run in 640x480 and if I tried to change the display resolution to 1024x768, the screen turns black but the music is still playing and my mouse clicks are still responding.

EDIT: Editing a post with a bunch of questions in them is kinda confusing...

There are many of them, too many to list. Common ones are Rivatuner, MSI Afterburner, Shadowplay... the list goes on. You'll just have to check your PC for any possible "overlay" type programs running

See previous answer to quote above. You'll have to check through all running processes and see which ones might be screen overlays.

Alternatively, if you are using the widescreen patches, make sure the patch you are using matches an available screen resolution. IE, if your maximum resolution is 1600x900, then using the patch for 1920x1080 won't work as it's not an available resolution.

I still get a black screen even after uninstall the NvidaGforce experience because they removed the disable overlay button for it. The menu appears after about 2 minutes it seems to be more a refresh issue for me
