When you meet Duras, right at the very beginning, he will lead you to the camp. You're given the choice to go there directly or not.

After I pick a choice, the game tells me that I leveled up, and does not react to any keypresses any longer. It's still raining and the sound is playing, but nothing else works.

Only if I disable the Tutorial, I can proceed from this point.

Game expects you to enter character screen at that point, after you return you can continue playing (you don't have to spend any points, just open it). I agree that it seems like a bad idea, tutorial should not be that invasive, or at least more explicit what it asks of you. The left menu icon (for controller) is pretty inconspicious, and it's the only screen element that suggests what you should do next.
The thing is, I tried that. I rebound some keys, maybe a missing bind caused that.

PS: Turns out that yes, indeed, the ATTRIBUTE button is needed. You cannot just use your handheld computer by pushing it's default key TAB, you have to press, I think, C or V is the default. I just thought I wouldn't need it., and just press TAB to get there. Boy, was I wrong.

So yes, the game does not have a last way out. Escape, or anything like that. If you need that key, and you can't press it, you will only have ALT-F4 left to get out.
