As with some other folks, I just bought this game and can't get the gamepad controller that I own (Gemini GCE908) to work with it. I edited the joystick file from true to false as noted elsewhere, but that made no difference. I can get Jim to whip his head at targets to his right and diagonal below right, but can't get him to change direction no matter which button I push, or whether the gamepad is set to analog or not. I am a complete n00b with dosbox, and could use any and all help.
Thanks

The "timed=false" thing didn't work for my pad either (I'm using a PS2 Dual Shock via USB adapter), so I fiddled with the other settings in EWJ1.conf and found a possible fix. I changed the line "joysticktype=auto" to "joysticktype=4axis", and the controller started working normally. It's worth a shot, at least.

If the game works properly with keyboard controls, you could just get Joy2Key. You can use that to map gamepad input to keypresses.
The joystick=4axis change now has my gamepad not functioning at all.
I'll try to mess with the joy2key program I found.
I wish GOG would simply find a way to fix this.
Same problem here. I'm trying to get this game to work with a PS3 Dual Shock through USB and the buttons are all weird. The game itself only lets you calibrate a couple functions.
does DOSBox tell anything about the joystick ? (switch to windowed mode with alt-enter and look at the other dosbox window)
I have the same problem. I can't use my joypad. I also tried to recover an old joystick, but it does not work. To play with keyboard is too complex for me.

Does the PaakType suggestion worked? If yes please select it as an solution. If no please try sth like this:
Enter your control panel, game controllers, click advance and select the joystick from the drop down menu. Also try to switch to use it "with old software".

as I responded on October 31st, Paak TYpe's suggesion didn't work for me, and the gamepad actually stopped responding at all. I went looking for a joy to key program, but never hassled with it. Got into the Beta for COD World at War and then Left 4 Dead and never got around to messing with it.
I'm just saying that, they sell a game that should work with a game pad; they post that they are looking for feedback; and this seems to be a common problem. It would be nice if GOG would come up with an easy fix.
My joystick (I'm hardcore, I know) works great with EWJ on the default settings, so I don't know what your problem is. Maybe you should go to your control panel and set your gamepad as a default 4-button 2-axis joystick? Or maybe you should buy a decent gamepad?
