I played Earth 2140 and 2150 back when I was a little kid, and I remember both games were very fun. I bought all Earth games on GOG so I can enjoy them again.
2150 was great fun, I feel like a real commander playing the campaign. The missions have great diversity. The three factions are all very unique. It's one of my favorite strategy game even to this date.
2140, however, was extremely frustrating. Ok, not much story going on. Not any diversity in the missions. Ok, I can accept that. But the missions are way too hard. I almost feel like a troll designed all the levels. Why would someone think sending an attack force to the player's base every minute a good design? Suicide apc that try to capture and destroy your buildings every minute? As if that's not annoying enough, let's add some air raid? And send a bunch of heavy units after the player destroy one of the enemies base?
it's really annoying because even if you put lots of units and defensive buildings in your base, most of them will not actively engage the enemies until its too late. I've seen many times my units let an ED transport pass through (they fired some missiles, but failed to destroy it) and capture my buildings. It is also an headache to command the army. The pathfinding seems to be quite bad, half of my army will walk toward opposite direction when trying to go through a choke point. They sometimes move around without order or suddenly decide to chase down enemy units, resulting them being killed. When under attack, most of them will be idling unless they're hit, which means I have to look after them every second or they die without killing many enemies. And in most missions, I only have limited resources (hard to get too much money with only one mine) which make losses not very acceptable. The result is a very tiresome and frustrating game. And damn, I remember this is a good game...the only good thing is that as a UCS player I can build shadow to cloak my army and minimize losses.
Just some thoughts.
