It seemed to get a bad rap for a while but is it really worth playing now? I love games like Age of Wonders and HoMM2-5 and Civ2-5. Eador Genesis looks amazing but wonder if I should play that instead of this.

Besides the graphics update, is there now any other notable differences in either game??

Just play Genesis as Masters offers nothing really new. The graphics are not that good enough to justify the remake to me.

Also Genesis has a player made expansion called New Horizons which you can play ounce you have played the original for a bit.
Just that Genesis can play a campaign game all the way to the end whereas Masters will crash at some point down the road becoming unplayable but apart from that (and graphics) no there is no difference between them.

Addendum,
A campaign game starts small but eventually becomes a monster with massive armies battling it out over large shards (think of these as islands)… you can win before that happens but the entire campaign could easily take you months to play as a weekend gamer.

I very rarely start any TBS game with the Campaign as I find you don't learn a lot from it as it starts you off so slowly that everything you think you know becomes obsolete to quickly. I always start with Single Scenarios as this gives you all the options and doesn't treat you like a retard.

I have actually not played the Campaign mode in Genesis beyond say 3-4 shards. It just becomes so damn annoying.
Usually I am the same way with these kind of games, Loynis...but I gotta say I really like the campaign in Eador. It's motivating to choose shards based on the unlocks, love the buy bonus for Astral Energy thing, and the banter with Zarr and the others rules. Aside from that it's not the usual scripted braindead scenarios of other campaigns, but just good old random map action with benefits.
Yeah the first 5 or so are a bit lame, but now as an experienced player one can win those very fast.
The campaign was fun but not something I want to do again anytime soon. It took me over a year of weekend gaming.
It's kind of odd but one of the main negatives people have had about Genesis (other than sometimes getting it to work on newer machines without problems or the no real Save Game) is the fact that there was no Game Manual included. When I started thinking and reading comments more about this I realized 2 major things right off.

1. 99% of the time I never bother with manuals, I find that most of the time in game info you get by just right clicking is enough. Also that on the rare times I do consult a Game Manual it's never before I play a game. I like to learn by trial and error.

2. Most people think what they want is a Manual for the game when in actuality what they are really asking for 75% of the time is a strategy guide. They want to know HOW can so and so beat specific Monsters. Example is how can my solo Warrior take on Spiders is one of the most common things in this game.

They never like to be told that it really shouldn't be done with that class and to use another when you don't have ways to get around their poison.

Also Genesis is HARD and not for extremely casual gamers. It's for ppl that actually like something that takes effort to accomplish.
Agreed, Loynis, the manual is ingame anyway when you right click on stuff.

Btw... does this have anything to do with anything in this thread? :D

Yes because in the posters opening he mentions wondering if he should play Genesis over Masters so I was trying to give some feedback on some of the reasons people seem to DISLIKE Genesis and clarifying them a bit.

The hardest thing for me when comparing Genesis and Masters is the fact that no other game I am aware of was simply a remake with nothing substantially added so there is not really any other comparables that can be made. I mean if they just remade a game like Master of Magic that would probably be better because of the fact that the graphics are SOOOOOOOoooooo outdated. Genesis is only 5 years old and really didn't need "Better" (lol) graphics whereas MoM is almost 20 years old. which game logically needed a redo?! Especially when they felt that it entitled them to quadruple the price from 5 bucks to 20.

End rant.....for now.
Don't bother, just bought it off Steam, found out dear developer introduced a brand new bug with 1.4.0 - units with 0HP just don't die. They stay on board with 0hp, and when healed, they spring back to life.

The author of the game probably does little to no testing, and has no idea about Q/A process prior to releasing a new version, so it probably won't be better.

I would stay clear off his future creations.

Wow, now Necrons from the 40K universe have warped into the World of Eador. Maybe someday they might finally get a handle on this game.

*Sigh*

Goes back to playing the 1.1.3 version (been finding the current GOG version very playable for the most part)
