My mage/fighter will only attack wth his bow when in auto mode. And other characters keep equipping different items before a battle. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

It's a feature.
But you can control it to some degree. If you want characters to use bows, equip arrows. If you want them to melee, unequip arrows.

I have the arrows ready and the bow, that’s why I’m confused. The other characters that use bows don’t have this issue and they’re the same class.
