I'm not sure if it the FX mod and the changes it brings, but this map seems impossible. Gone are the base building aspects, imps/ hell hounds seem hard wired to charge out of the opening starting area and provoke a much stronger foe.

There seems to be no way to build up. What am I missing.

I remember completing the game when I was 17, but this seems insanely hard, and against the otherwise enjoyable game mechanics.

Maybe you played DK1 at the time without the AI patch?

yes I first played it more or less when it first came out. Has the AI patched borked the game?

It seems there is nothing you can do, your attacked by a far stronger enemy almost instantly.

The easiest way is to transfer a high level vampire from earlier mission and then attack immediately using possession. But that's "cheating".

The key, in my opinion, to usually beat the opponent keeper is to focus on Bile Demons and Dragons. Also, scavenge. Trained up bile demons are insanely powerful in combat. Also, getting some vampires couldn't hurt (have a graveyard and drip your imps onto dead bodies to have them bring them into the graveyard and after enough bodies have decomposed you'll have a vampire.) Also, if you have one vampire in the scavenger room, and ONLY one, he improves the scavenging drastically. Also only keep creatures of the same type in the scavenger room.
I have just defeated this level, I have always found it difficult but think I have found the perfect way to defeat it.
.Quickly build your main rooms 5x5.
.Get the bridge researched.
.As soon as the hounds appear, keep them busy in the training room
.Now build rows of bridge horizontally across the lava between your island and the tiny island with gold to the south, leave a gap between each row, should get about 4 rows of bridge in with a space between each.
.Sell any bridge parts that connect the rows so that each row is an individual room
.If the enemy makes its way onto a section of bridge then sell that square from under them.

I found this method stopped the enemy from being able to quickly build a bridge to your island and bombard you with higher level creatures.
Once you have trained up a few creatures (mine were between lvls 3 and 5) send an imp to the right edge of the map (build a bridge from the scavenger room right) and then get the imp to claim the land down the right edge all the way to the bottom of the map then add a few bridge pieces to connect to the enemy and send forth a can of whoop-ass
There are unallied Dragons in the lava, use one possessed hound to quickly claim them.

That's the secret. I remember almost tearing my hair out with this mission until I figured out the dragons are key to victory. 'course, you also need to expand at the same time and build up your base.

Good ol' Bullfrog, I say.
Thanks guys I shall try those ideas. I totally forgot you could transfer a unit how do you do that again?

I think at the very least as the FX mod makes the game faster making the lack of time you have to prepare come around in faster.

If only those bastard imps would stop claiming all the land.
You can slow down the game in the KeeperFX settings.
solution:

I finally managed to beat it using the 'broken bridge' technique which seems to confuse the AI and slows down its frontal push. That gives you enough time to build up, also diseasing up some of my hellhounds as the randomly charged in seems to help loads as well.

Thanks for the help.

Amazing tip, thanks! It doesn't just slow down the enemy, it blocks their advance completely.
