What is KeeperFX?

KeeperFX is an open source modification for Dungeon Keeper 1 / Dungeon Keeper Gold.

- It contains a rewritten game engine with improved AI and bug fixes
- It has high resolution and widescreen support
- It has TCP/IP multiplayer support
- It has support for multiple campaigns (Ancient Keeper, Burdened Imps' Level Pack etc.)
- It has support for 12 languages

Grab these:

Please make sure you are using the very latest Dungeon Keeper Gold 2.0.0.4 release from GOG.

You will need to download KeeperFX 0.4.9 Complete.

0.4.9 Complete Download (7zip archive)

Older releases are available on GitHub.

Notes regarding the latest release:

- Do not overwrite your previous version of KeeperFX or it will crash your game
- It is recommended to change the video resolution to fit your requirements. If you do change this setting, ensure that In-game, Movies and Menu are all set to the same value.

Install instructions:

1) First thing's first, ensure that you have a vanilla installation of Dungeon Keeper Gold present on your computer. If you are using the GOG version, this should be located in GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold

2) Extract KeeperFX into an empty folder of your choosing.

3) REQUIRED: Load launcher.exe from within your newly created KeeperFX folder, and click the "Installation" button. A prompt will appear, asking you to select the folder where your original installation of Dungeon Keeper Gold is located. Once selected, it will automatically copy a set of required files into the KeeperFX folder so that you can run the game.

4) OPTIONAL: Create a shortcut to launcher.exe on your desktop for an easy way to customize the game options and change languages. You can also create a shortcut to keeperfx.exe, so that you can easily specify command line options that are referenced in the keeperfx_readme.txt, for example I'm using -nointro -nocd -vidsmooth

5) Run KeeperFX using either launcher.exe or keeperfx.exe and enjoy a rather splendid and deliciously evil game!

Official support is offered on the KeeperFX Forum.

Music:

1) Edit your shortcut to keeperfx.exe and specify the command line option -nocd

2) In your GOG install folder, you will find OGG Vorbis files keeper02.ogg, keeper03.ogg etc. Copy these files into the GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold\music sub-folder.

3) Enjoy the game authentically with music!

Fun extra:

Maybe you're a little bored of the English narrator and would prefer the in-game speech to be in Classical Latin.

1) Download the Dungeon Keeper Classical Latin speech file

2) Extract the file and rename it to speech_eng.dat

3) Backup or rename the original speech file in KeeperFX\sound or GOG Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold\sound (depending on where you installed KeeperFX)

4) Copy the new file into the sound folder and overwrite if necessary.

Troubleshooting:

I recommend that you read the keeperfx_readme.txt or the newer DKFans KeeperFX Wiki page as most of your questions will probably be answered there.
DKFans KeeperFX Wiki - Troubleshooting

On the main menu, the cursor is the horned devil. Only the top left horn will interact with selected menu items.
The menu bars do scroll, you need to use the small up and down arrows at the top and bottom of each bar.

If you are not able to play any of the single player campaigns, it means that you have an incomplete install of KeeperFX, or you have installed the latest Alpha patch over an out of date version of KeeperFX Complete.
If everything has been copied correctly, your KeeperFX folder should be about 900+ MB in size.

If you are following these instructions for a non-GOG install of Dungeon Keeper, make sure you have the original Dungeon Keeper CD handy, as you will need to locate and copy the DATA, LDATA, LEVELS and SOUND folders from the CD.

Notes:

You can specify in-game screen resolutions in the keeperfx.cfg file. I have mine set to:

; List of in-game resolutions. ALT+R will switch between them.
INGAME_RES=1280x720x32 1920x1080x32 3840x2160x32

If you're new to Dungeon Keeper, keep in mind that you can zoom the camera in and out using the HOME and END keys, and also rotate the camera using DEL and PAGE DN. The UI can be toggled on and off with the CTRL+TAB key.

The following information only applies to versions of KeeperFX 0.4.8 and below:

If you're experiencing a bouncy or shaky mouse cursor, this can be fixed by changing the SDL Video driver.
Append your KeeperFX shortcut to include this command line option: -vidriver windib
Alternatively you can specify the windib driver using Launcher.exe, under "Run options".

As a thank you, all I ask is that you have a listen to this.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask!

Huge thanks to @Loobinex for helping me maintain this thread.

Cheers.

The included launcher.exe with KeeperFX is capable of copying across any required files in order to play the game, but I would still personally recommend following the manual steps listed above to ensure that it is set up perfectly.

Refer to the keeperfx_readme.txt for further notes and troubleshooting.

Thanks for the instructions, worked very well!
It's been a while since I've used KeeperFX, so your instructions helped me get up to speed ^_^

It runs soo much smoother/faster out-of-the-box, compared to the dosbox based gog release
Didn't know about this thing !! it's AWESOME !! Sooo smooth, a lot of extra campaigns and as a plus the "fast forward" (ok, it's frameskip, but it does the same !!) :D

Thank you !!
Augh, do I really have to use CD mounting software/are there reliable free ones?

I don't know about save games compatibility, but the only "issue" I found so far is that the fullscreen map and the cinematics remains at the native resolution (small), in contrast with the custom resolutions you can use to play the game, but the gameplay itself is awesome, really perfect, smoother than playing the original game on my pentium 3 with win98, and you can also use the frameskip function to speed up the game !!

This is really the best experience I had so far playing an old game with an unofficial engine !!

I already mentioned a reliable and free one in the instructions.

Woops! I had used it before but for some reason I vaguely remember paying. I must have mixed it up with something else. Thanks!
Where is the .gog file? I found it neither in the game's directory, in the files extracted from the installer nor anywhere else.

Maybe you have the extensions hidden... try too look at the properties of the "game" file in the directory where DK is installed
Does it work with Deeper Dungeons levels? I can't see Deeper Dungeons campaign to choose from in the KeeperFX Start New Game menu.

edit: LOL I can see there are multiple languages in the game files and I successfully changes language to Polish :-DDDDD

My file extensions are not hidden and I also searched the file with a local search engine.
