I don't know why, but the only thing working for me is the software mode.

Whatever for an .exe i am using, i just start the software mode (it's looking like...and all DX Overlay Tools aren't working).
Althoug it's saying in the menu that the gog patch is working, it's obviously not.

I just can start the DX mode when i started the original .exe with the parameters "-32bitdisplay -32bittextures -nointmouse" but than i don't have any textures at all.

Have anyone an idea?
I cannot even see the menu. What a shame. And it says on the store page that game is fixed for Win7. Yeah, right.
Win7-64bit, Optimus laptop (intel 3000HD + nvidia 540M GT).
Thanks for nothing, GOG.

The game is fixed for Win7. In fact, most people can even run it on Windows 8, which is a testament to GOG's dedication to get old games up and running on modern systems without much hassle. You'd have way more trouble trying to get the original boxed copy to run -- or any illegal download, for that matter.

All people seem to do in these sub-forums is bitch and moan about GOG's service, when they don't even try to submit a report to GOG support. No one ever talks about the games themselves, except for the System Shock 2 owners, all sub-forums are riddled with technical questions and troubleshooting of some sort or another.

If I got Interstate '76 to run, you can get Dungeon Keeper to do so, as well. And stop blaming GOG, please. It's a miracle they even get old games to run on most computers, as some of these games were glitchy as hell to begin with, and their engines and components have long been discontinued and ceased being supported. It's not GOG's fault that the PC "Master Race" (LOL!) is a joke of a gaming platform in which a single variation in hardware and software combinations can make a game unplayable on a computer that's technically similar to another one which is able to run it out of the box. These threads are full of workarounds and solutions to people's problems, have you at least tried some of them? If none works, then contact GOG support, they're very competent and can work with you, individually, to sort things out with your specific machine.

I had to spend days trying to make Silent Hill 2 -- a game in which I spent a huge deal of money, mind you -- run decently on the computer I had back then. No one ever heard me complain and whine about it, I just found a fix, after browsing non-stop for days, and moved on to enjoy my game. Just be glad all GOG games are optimized for modern systems, even if the small differences in hardware and software makes them a bit buggy at times.

[EDIT] For the record, I'm really sorry that you and many others can't run the game, but at least try being constructive when looking for ways to make it run, instead of the "thanks for nothing" approach.

I uploaded a pack of registry files that make it easier to test the game, with or without hardware acceleration.
It should hopefully solve the problem for some people experiencing a black screen.

Download them here http://www.mediafire.com/download/e95zy3m1i0jjjha/DKII_Registry_Patches.7z

These registry files only make changes that work with DKII.EXE, rather than DKII-DX.EXE.

Feel free to modify them yourself if you prefer to play in a different screen resolution. You can edit them with Notepad.

Aloha;

Successfully installed the general improvement mod and customised my resolution in the registry to native (1920x1080) on an Nvidia GTX 570.

Can't seem to find much material on setting the camera to a more variable zoom so am now asking for help.

Separately, Devilhood, what's the purpose of those reg patches?

Cheers

Just for people who don't feel brave enough to edit the registry themselves and would like widescreen / custom resolution support.

If you'd like an unlocked zoom you have to use the Supreme Keeper patch. The only downside is that it hasn't been patched to work for version 1.5 which is what the General Improvement Mod is built with. It only offers an unlocked zoom for version 1.3, 1.7, 1.73 and 1.8.

7upMan: Devilhood, is the aspect ration preserved in widescreen mode?
avatar
devilhood: Wyrmcast's primary aim is to preserve the well-balanced AI already present on patch 1.51, to fine-tune the single player campaign for a more challenging experience and to fix as many bugs as possible.

His mod comes with a comprehensive change log so you know exactly what is being done. He regularly updates his mod, interacts with the community on the KeeperKlan forums, and it also comes bundled/integrated with other maps, mods and tools by other authors.
So is there a way to change the aspect ratio? As far as I know, if you use the widescreen hack, the screen will be stretched, which I'd rather live without.
Ok so am going for the supreme keeper option, but get the weanetr.dll error which was fixed with GIM by extracting files into the DK2 directory. Any help?

Cheers
The problem with GOG's release is that it is based on V1.7 of DKII, and this has broken AI and multiplayer.
Wyrmcast's patch is based on V1.51 which doesn't have any of these problems.

Can someone with an AMD card or onboard graphics test this for me?

Copy the files ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll from WineD3D 1.6-rc4 (build date 28/06/2013) into your Dungeon Keeper 2 folder and you're good to go.
I tested it with my Nvidia graphics card and it successfully lists my device as DirectDraw HAL on the in-game graphics options. Obviously it would work for me, because I have an Nvidia card, so that is why I need people with different hardware configurations to test this.

Also use this registry file to set your options to 1024 x 768 with full hardware acceleration enabled, unless you know how to do it yourself.

The WineD3D patch has been used with other games and produces fantastic results. It's a saviour for Windows 8 users anyhow, because Microsoft decided to completely remove support for DirectDraw and legacy screen mode hardware acceleration.

I'd love to, but first I need to know about that aspect ratio thing...

Only the User Interface is stretched when you're using a widescreen resolution. The fonts and 3D environment are rendered correctly, but the FOV isn't adjusted to compensate for the extra width so it looks a little more "zoomed in" than it probably should.

It might be an idea to kindly ask in the KeeperKlan forums, someone might be able to produce a "Supreme Keeper" zoom unlocked version for GIM / 1.51.

This is glorious! :D
With which games before were wine DLLs used under windows for fixing windows problems and bugs???
I'm excitated and will test with my AMD card... :)

I've used it primarily with Divine Divinity and Jagged Alliance 2. It should provide increased compatibility for modern systems with basically any game that uses DirectDraw. Some games might exhibit minor graphical glitches, but it will run at normal speed.

You can find out if your game works properly by searching this list at WineHQ.

If there is enough interest in using WineD3D with Windows 8, this could be the best way to provide legacy compatibility across the board. The games that still have problems with WineD3D can be fixed by a developer if they're skilled and patient enough, but again, it all comes down to interest.

I think most people eventually get annoyed with Windows 8 and decide that it's easier to just install Windows XP SP3 in a virtual environment.

hmm, at least for my setup (win XP 32bit, AMD Radeon 5670) the wine DLLs seems not to work. Neither the DKII-dx.exe nor the DKII.exe start up, seems to be stuck in a endless loop, while without the wine DLLs both exe's are working.

I know for certain it wont work with DKII-DX.exe because that one is coded to use patch.dll.

I ran DKII.EXE with V1.51

- Renamed movies folder (to skip possible crashes)
- No compatibility mode set
- Registry file applied
- ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll in the folder

Was your set up the same?

For me it also worked using V1.7 under WinXP Compatibility mode.
