Hi

I have just bought and installed Dungeon Keeper 1 and my problem is that I can't seem to get it to work properly without lag. I tried tons and tons of solutions and none of them helped:

I tried to set my Cycles from "80000" to "max" in my dosbox config file, I tried different combinations of resolutions and settings within Graphic mode setup.

I tried windowed mode, full screen.

When I start DK1, the game seems kinda slow and choppy. I want the best possible graphics (Alt+R) without lag. Please tell me how I make it work properly.

Thanks in advance.

My monitor is Samsung SyncMaster P2450 (max resolution 1920*1080)
My OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
My CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8200 2.66HGz
Memory: 4GB RAM
Graphic card: Geforce GTX 285

As you see I have a relatively insane setup for a game that old. I don't get it how it can lag more than it did on my 800MHz computer. It seems to me that my Windows can't seem to make an old game run in 32 mode properly.

PLEASE HELP ME PLAYING THIS WITHOUT LAG

Have you tried setting the game to one core?

JudasIscariot: Have you tried setting the game to one core?
If by that, you mean pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del, rightclicking Dosbox under "processes" and under a specific menu (mine's in Danish) chosing 1 core - yes I did that. Nothing helped

Yes, that's what I meant :D

Have you tried the other usual fixes? Installing and running the game as administrator? Have installed the game outside of the Program Files folder?

If none of that helps, please be so kind as to send our Support department an email with your DxDIag attached and we'll do what we can to help you out. Also, since it's the weekend here in Poland at the moment, it might seem like getting an answer is taking too long. Fear not, your email will be read and looked at. Our Support staff reads them all :D
I also tried with KeeperFX and it runs smooth, but there is no music. And I even mountet my GAME.GOG file in Daemon Tools and changed it's drive letter to A in: (rightclick) My Computer > Administrate > Device Something (mine's in Danish). I also edited keeperfx.cfg to INSTALL_PATH=A:\Keeper

Sure I could play with no music but that's why I decided to buy Dungeon Keeper from GOG expecting that it would work smoothly on a modern system.

So far I only had technical issues and regret of buying it in the first place... I feel I've wasted too much time to get this game to work properly.

about the core affinity, maybe setting the affinity AFTER startup is already to late?

here is a solution for start-up setting of the affinity for programs whichs works for all relevant windows versions (XP, vista and 7) and which can be also automated (by e.g. BAT skript) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/827754/how-to-set-processor-affinity-from-batch-file-for-windows-xp
It's based on sysinternals psexec (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx). Usage would be psexec -a 0 "yourprogramm.exe"

Could you please explain how I can get this to work in correlation with Dungeon Keeper 1?

There's too much "science" that I have to go through for such simple game, just to find out in the end that it still hasn't solved the issue..

see this topic:

Ok here is how I fixed my problem. After many hours of struggle not being able to run DK1 smoothly from gog's Dosbox platform, I decided to turn to KeeperFX - here it worked fine and smooth and with beautiful graphics but no music.

After reading several forum suggestions I found out that I had to change the drive letter of my virtual drive meaning: mountet GAME.GOG (which by the way is retarded filename for a mountable file because unless you type *.* and press enter in Daemon Tools browser window, it won't find it).

Anyway I mounted that file in Daemon Tools and it came as letter G: in My Computer (My real DVD drive was now H: because I changed it, ergo the virtual drive must come alphabetically before the real DVD/CD drive). That way the game can play music because it listens to the first available "DVD" drive. ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/change-add-or-remove-a-drive-letter] )

Anyway here is where it got interesting: I tried and tried mounting the same file over and over and launching KeeperFX but the problem persisted. No music ingame. I finally decided that I want to try to download a torrent of the game which is called "Dungeon Keeper Gold" just to see if that would work. That image file is 346MB compared to the 179MB "GAME.GOG" file. So I mounted the "Dungeon Keeper Gold.iso", launched KeeperFX - and guess what. The music worked right away.

I am utterly displeased with the misguided installation information for this game (or rather the lack of it). The game lags for me using GOG's Dosbox-launcher, and the image that follows with the purchase is useless because KeeperFX can't read the music from it.

This is my first purchase on GOG.com and I'm already disapointed that I've wasted my time and money on something that caused me so many problems. I expected this game to be optimized for newer computers without so many problems that follow with it. I've wasted a day trying to get this to work.

I hope someone can benefit from the solution in this topic and I strictly suggest the GOG-Team to improve their service and the information about their game installation. Make more user-friendly and versatile guides and consolidate all the possible issues and their solutions and stop selling games, unless you are 100% sure that it will work without any problems.

Best Regards

EDIT: Even looking around from the window (where you see the conquered land) with mouse cursor works properly in KeeperFX and not official GOG-DK1 - here it goes too fast

As one of the mods posted earlier, the number of possible hw/sw combinations makes it impossible to be 100% sure that the game will run perfect on every single person's system. (Console gaming makes it a bit easier, I imagine.) That's why there's a help forum. (although it would be nicer if issues/solutions were cataloged in an easier-to-find way)

Also, here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/the_silver_case

and http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/the_silver_case/post41/?staff=yes
There's no music with KeeperFX since the game.gog image doesn't have it, it's instead been ripped to the ogg files in the game folder and game.gog is only the data track.

Quite annoying. I'd prefer that they'd leave CD audio tracks in the disc image instead of doing this, and not just for this game.

I can play a lot of games without the original soundtrack, but Dungeon Keeper isn't one of them - it adds so much to the atmosphere. That's the main problem I have with this release as well. Luckily, I still have my original disc and the image I made of it.
Holy cow Thanks so much!
all i did was press alt+R and it fixed the lag
And here we fucking are.. 2017 and its not fixed yet :) still having these issues. Alt-R to make it all nice and sweet makes it unplayable, literally running 10fps..

Try opening the dosboxDK.conf file in notepad and change the setting : cycles=8000 ( I believe that's the default) to cycles=max . It's about a third of the way down. That should fix the fps issues you are having.
