My old CD copy of Dungeon Keeper 2 has been close to perish for a while.
Thinking of buying it here, but... which version is it?

Patch 1.7 (the last one, introducing a new trap and creature) had broken Keeper AI in campaign and skirmish and removed many creatures from portal spawn lists in most campaign levels. So, naturally, I always stayed on the last stable patch before that (1.51, if memory serves; the 1.6x series was dead on arrival, aka would not even run).

Ideally, of course, this version would have fixed AI, original campaign settings *and* the new content, but if I have to choose, I'd rather get the working game with one less trap and one less creature (which itself was slightly bugged - would fall into the portal and get stuck there, if passing through the portal room on a straight line).

... Naturally, that means I'd rather not buy the GoG version, if it forced the broken patch version upon me, especially considering I for one have not had any trouble whatsoever getting the original game to run first on Win7 and then on Win10.

It's 1.7 with GOG's custom graphics renderer.

To play with the 1.51 codebase, use the General Improvement Mod: https://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=109
So... as soon as that third-party forum disappears, the game will be broken?
I think, I'll pass then.

Thank you for your answer.

Well, there's the solution right at the description on the download page. The GIM mod came with a set of 'balance changes' made by the original creator. Edited levels if you will. The GIM installation instructions have you delete the original levels, and take the GIM changed levels.

However, you can simply skip that and keep the original levels. And download the levels that just have the creature attraction bug fixed instead.

will that still fix the crappy AI that the 1.7 Patch has though? As on Skirmish they hardly do anything haha

Depends on which executable you launch. DKII-DX.exe remains on 1.7, but DKII.exe is 1.51.
