If you read the reviews here on Gog they are written by people who remember and love the game but havent actually played the game downloaded from Gog. When i first downloaded Duke Nukem from here and tried to play it i was very dissapointed. It wasn't the experience i remembered and Gog hadnt really modifed it for modern machines at all ... what they have done is bundle it with Dosbox. This is a freeware program that basically emulates Dos and is about as confusing as dos was too. This was a cheap fix and i really think you guys at Gog should have done better. It ran like crap through dosbox and the frame rate shut down when anything exciting happened. Dosbox made my modern comp run like a 386 circa 1993. The controls were unchanged and it was a horrible experience.
Luckily there was a link on the Duke Nukem gog page to user mods to the game and thats where eveerything came right. If you own the Gog Duke or even an old copy you must use the new duke hi resolution pack..here is the link.

Im taking the time to write this cause this mod totally fixed everything and even made the game better than it was in the beginning..It doesn't just give you better graphics...It changes the controls to modern ASWD config and even fixed the look up problem i couldnt solve using the shiity dosbox crap. The guy that did this are awesome. Duke now plays better than most modern FPS engines and it totally transformed the game. Gog needs to bundle this mod with Duke, not Dosbox which is a waste of time.
I love this game again now..its even better than it used to be.
That shouldn't come to you as a news. All GOG DOS games run on DOSBox.
If you have an old computer capable of natively running the games, you can just install it there and play them without DOSBox.

Well, some of us prefer playing the game the way it was back in 1996. DOSBox is a terrific tool that - without having to buy an old PC - can give us that experience. HRP is a great mod and it does breathe new life into the game, but for me, it can't beat the nostalgic experience of playing the original. Also, the original Duke3D can be configured to work with WASD just fine. You can re-configure your controls using the setup program.
Regardless of how you're going about playing it, good to hear you're enjoying the game! It's a great classic.

And yes, you can with GOGs version. As Ralackk said, you can install it without using DOSBox if you have on old machine with DOS on it. The files are in the archive. Just extract it by using GOGs installer and then copy the game files elsewhere to run in a native DOS environment.

Well I'm sure DosBox work great with some games...just had a negative experience with Duke Nukem 3d is all...I've got a few other Dos games i want to try with DosBox to see how it handles them (Jonah Lomu Rugby).
Actaully the hight resolution mod doesnt like the open Gl Setting on my video card much so it plays in the original resolution but now just handels fater and better.
Anyway, the bottom line is..after years apart im hooked on Duke Nukem again and its a blast...definitely gonna check out the other new Duke mods...Good Times!

Sometimes you have to configure the settings of DOSBox to get the GOG games working well on your machine. They can't use optimized settings in the DOSBox they provide with the game as everyone's computers have different processors and RAM and whatnot, so all need a little tweaking to the DOSBox settings to get them running well on machines.
That said, I gather from the forums here that eDuke32 is a very popular engine to run the Duke3D game in, which means you can do away with the DOSBox anyway. There are quite a few apps that will run the game files so you might want to try looking for some of them to see how they get it running for you.
it really depends on the system you have my windows xp computer with an old Pentium m could not run the dosbox link but the windows nt native jfduke ran great. I now have Core2 duo windows 7 laptop and the dosbox now runs the game fine. Dosbox is required to run 16 bit dos titles in windows x64 and in 32 bit windows NT to provide dos sound support.
DosBox doesn't even come close to sucking it is one of my favorite programs ever. It is a little hard to setup if you are new to it or the DOS interface thankfully I'm not. Still it is a great program and had nothing to do with your problems in regards to Duke 3D it is just typical nostalgia being a bitch.
Well gog can't sell duke 3d using a unoffical engine with user built images for cash. gog.com sells the original registered atomic edition with a preconfigured dosbox shell. the build engine kept keyboard maps in the setup.exe application. also build is a massive engine that on some systems will not run in dos emulation over windows very well. you may not have remembered how painful it was to configure dos games compared to the modern windows titles.

Exactly, DOS could be extremely frustrating at times and that is putting it nicely.
gl3nnium, thanks for the post - without it I wouldn't have been able to get Duke up and running on my PC.
Sorry, but the GOG guys have really messed up this one for me. All the other games I've downloaded from GOG have run out of the box amazingly well, regardless of DosBox. Unfortunately, Duke would not run under any of the graphic modes, bar one (and then it ran quite badly). I also spent the time changing the default controls in the original Duke SetUp program, only for it not to take any effect in the game.
eDuke worked perfectly.
This is reasonably old but still the op is an idiot, the gog dosbox setting are optimal. Dos was confusing for those that didnt grow up with it, I did, its relatively easy for me to use, just requires a little research sometimes. Im actually trying to figure out a way to find out the duke configurations that are setup with this download so that I can use them on Blood which i have running and working but can use a little more tweaking for my liking. Anyhow GOG did a great job, my first download from them and i have to say im impressed.
Any old DOS game being resold, either here or on Steam, will probably use DosBox. I understand that's freeware and all and it's possible that some of these games are freeware, I like how it's all preconfigured even though I like messing with settings.
Honestly, I got my copy of Duke3D just so I have the levels file that the many different source ports need. But, I also like running it in DosBox just to play it like it was back in 1996.
Of course back then, I had problems with the sound, and Duke would sound like he either just finished eating a greasy pizza or has throat cancer. Hearing the game the way it's meant to be played thanks to DosBox and source ports made part of my life complete.
Thank goodness for eDuke32. Dosbox just crashes to desktop everytime I Ioad the game. I don't even see a single splash screen. Granted I have Windows 7 64 bit but without eDuke32, I'd be totally screwed unless I virtually ran dos or windows 95/98 in virtual pc.
Regardless if it did work, being able to run duke in all it's pixelated sprite glory in 1080p resolution with no choppiness, additional graphic warping from the norm or sound issues at all is pretty sweet.
I must disagree with the topic creator. I'm a purist so I want my games uncanged. While the HD pack looks nice, it's not Duke Nukem 3D unless it features it's original graphics.
Edit: Forget the not working part, forgot to run as administrator. Still though, the game doesn't run very fast and isn't optimized for my high screen resolution. I recommend everyone to use eduke32.

I've never played Duke Nukem 3D until I bought it here on GOG.com, and I've never had any problems with it. In fact, I'm having a hell of a time playing this game! Also, I don't have any problems with frame rate, and the computer I'm using is a crappy old desktop computer that was given to me years ago from some education program that never wanted it back.
