You know, that spin jump thing. Also, other than the sprites and animations, how different is it from the normal jump and is somersault needed to pass certain areas?

I don't think the somersault has any purpose beyond looking cool. I don't recall any situation where success at a jump relied on the somersault being triggered.

I think you need jump boots to do somersaults in DN1. Perhaps they are required to pass through some areas. It's certainly a useful item nonetheless.
