I have actually played and beat the original three Duke episodes with default keys. No mouse or custom controls, just the defaults. As as kid, I had the Duke 3D demo for Mac, and the controls were the same. It is possible to beat the original three episode with such, it amuses me actually.

What boggles my mind is, why does Duke 3D use these awkward controls by default? Thinking about it is funny, back in 1997 when I played the demo, I didn't even think about using keyboard and mouse. Playing with the keyboard worked well, and mouse was odd (pushing the mouse up meant go forward for example).

Just something on my mind. I usually don't come to forums, but I'm just wondering why did the game have this setup. It feels like the game begs for keyboard and mouse at times (some switches high up for example, need to be pointed at). It makes sense with Doom as there wasn't look up/down and jump/crouch, but Duke is more advance as you can look up/down or jump/crouch (not knocking Doom, I like Doom myself).

Can't you press y to enable mouse look?

Yes I have it enabled. In fact I currently have the game setup with WASD to move and the mouse to aim.

I was more or less wondering how did people play this game before the concept of using mouse and keyboard. Thinking about the demo I played in 1997 on Mac, I pretty much used defaults, and possibly others did (I had no net in 1997, so I couldn't "Yahoo" it). It didn't even cross my mind then.

It was curiosity if anyone ever played the game with its original control scheme, or used mouse and keyboard back in Duke's heyday.

Ah ok. I use the normal controls for this and doom. :P
The mouse controls just feel weird to me.

Yup! Cool, I was using keyboard and mouse controls last night, but yeah I'll use these classic-style key bindings too. Comes in handy that the game is playable with just a keyboard in event I don't have a mouse (laptop here).

I have also been wondering about this. I guess it was just what people were used to at the time, so the developers stuck with it so as not to alienate anyone. Even Quake uses the keyboard only setup by default, even though it has perfect mouselook support.
I played Doom and Doom II and Duke Nukem all the way through back in the day with just the keyboard controls - it was in fact just the way things were.

I also played most of Descent with just the keyboard controls and no mouse - THAT was a game that would tie your fingers in to knots!

I play all of them now with mouse and keyboard - just so much easier...
