Is there a way for me to change the control configuration. I just downloaded from gog and i don't have any idea how to change the controls. Right now they are very awkward.
If you are using DOSBox, run the Setup entry in the Start Menu folder to change the controls; it's a separate program, so you'll have to make your changes and then go back to the game to see if you like them. If you are using eduke32 you can change the controls within the game itself.
If you install eduke32 - say no to using duke3d.cfg and you'll be given a WASD + Mouse control.

The original game supports WASD and mouselook all the same.
i was wondering this too. thanks.
Just download eduke and put that in the folder where you installed duke3D. Start up eduke and it will allow you to use a mouse+keyboard the way most current shooters do.

Could you please explain? I think I accidentally stumbled upon said WASD and mouselook in GOG's Duke3D, but I couldn't find a toggle or similar mentioned in the PDF manual. I've downloaded EDuke32 and the HRP in the meantime, but if you could elaborate on the original control I'd appreciate it. TIA!

Toggle? Run the SETUP.EXE and configure the controls _precisely_ like in EDuke32; choose the function, press enter and hit the desired key.
Then you just need to press 'U' in-game to enable/disable mouse-aiming.

Thanks for that, but although I have been able to set up most parameters, including separate ones for keyboard and mouse control, mouse Y-axis does not appear to allow vertical aiming. (Only offers: analog_moving, analog_strafing, analog_turning)
I should specify that I would like to write a review of Duke3D, but I can't do so in good conscience until/unless I can get the original game configured properly before adding mods. Yes, I could just run EDuke, but it will neither work nor look the same.

I'm not sure what you're after, but the mouse axises are properly set up by default, you just need to change the button configurations (if you want), go in game and press U.

OK, well, I obviously messed up the configuration somehow because even though I deleted DUKE3D.CFG, the game still registers my last incorrect efforts to map mouse Y-axis.
Are you sure you know the problem I'm talking about? I feel you are operating from a perfectly normal config and and assume I am too, which is not the case... I am trying to illustrate from the attached screencap that I cannot map vertical look to mouse Y-axis.
CORRECTION: there is no option to assign ANALOG vertical look to mouse Y-axis. However, as a temporary measure I have assigned DIGITAL vertical look to mouse Y-axis. I gotta tell ya, that's not so hot. when you're used to analog... :-)

Set the y axis to analog_moving. In-game, pressing the mouse-look key (default: U) changes the y axis from moving to mouse-look.

BINGO!! That solved it. Thanks so very much! Two thumbs up**

The GRP file is in the installation directory (if you bought the GOG version, it will be located in C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Duke Nukem 3D by default, or wherever you installed it to). You should be able to just drop eduke32's files into the game folder and then create shortcuts or whatever. Eduke32 won't interfere with the DOS original's settings and such, so the two can share the same files without any problems.
