What the hell does that mean? I'm just trying to walk through the door that I just came in! I'm stuck in my own room, because I used the ring, it teleported me to the center, and then I walked all the way back into my room. Now when I try to walk back out I get this message. The hell is going on?

I'm not sure....I got that message too but not in the same area, but in my case I didn't get stuck, it was more of a "you can't do that" response.

If the game has got stuck in that room it sounds like the issue is possibly triggered by using the ring, I had no problems, but I never used the ring either....

You might have to restore :(

Also if it helps avoid this happening again, as long as you got everything from your room at the beginning of the game you don't need to go back there.
Not to be a necromancer, bringing an ancient thread back to life, but I just had this happen after doing the exact same thing. I was in the bedroom right after the game started. I was looking through my inventory and saw the ring with "invoke" I clicked it to see what it would do and it teleported me. Since I wasn't done looking around, I found my way back to the room, but now I can't leave. Getting the same message as OP.

Definitely a bug. Gotta restart. At least I haven't gotten far yet.
After more than twenty-five years, the likelyhood of them fixing the bug is between nought and nil. Let me cite Leisure Suit Larry: "Save early, save often!" (Sorry if I got it slightly wrong as I have not touched the game in thirty years.)
Does invoking the rimg's power still work? It would technically take you out of the room, just several screens away from the corridor. As Winterborn said, there's not much to do inside the room, so if you don't want to restart the game, that could be an imperfect solution.
