I remember it being so negatively regarded to the point that a mod was developed to skip it. I was wondering what opinions GOG people have of it today and if it really is as bad as people said it was back in the day.

Which game ? and also wich quest?

I think there was that mod for the first game for the quest for releasing poor Connor.
I personally like it as I was able to play with a different character ( Irving or Jowan) or annoying Morrigan a little.

This is probably the reference to the Broken Circle quest, and yes The Fade is terrible. This is my least favourite dungeon, because the visibility is so poor and you play alone without your companions, so you need to use lots of tactics to survive it.

I considered quitting the game for that quest.

The fact that you can't see **** is what makes it really awful IMHO
thanks for the feedback, guys. also, I noticed that the Skip The Fade mod has approaching half a million downloads, so, I guess my questions are answered.

The Fade is one of the best parts of the game, it's just a casual filter which means it gets unfairly maligned.

First, it remains unquestionably the best place to strengthen your main character. No other point in the game are you going to be spoonfed free attribute points like you are in the Fade.

Second, it breaks away from the standard mold of the game. Rather than looking at it as you being alone, look at it as a mini-game with your various forms rock-paper-scissoring encounters. It's so intuitively designed that you can breeze through the area with a suboptimal build on Nightmare without breaking a sweat.

Finally, it's incredibly atmospheric and a huge part of establishing the theme and tone of what makes Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Origins.

Don't let the negativity of others deprive you of one of the best, most unique experiences in one of the few excellent RPGs of yesteryear.

Agree completely.
I never minded the Fade either. I think what frustrates a lot of players is that it requires some degree of backtracking to the same zones if you want to obtain all the bonuses. This can get tedious if you're not familiar with the layout (from a previous game or a walkthrough), as you won't know the most efficient way through the area.

It's also one of the longer "dungeons" in the game, particularly in light of the fact that you have to slog through most of the Circle Tower to get to it at all. Bioware took the approach of making most of this area (and a good part of the game as a whole) as a series of dozens of fights as you progress from one room to the next.

I personally found the caverns in Haven to be a more obnoxious area of the game than the Fade.

If you're trying the game, I recommend playing the Fade at least once and trying to maintain an open mind about it. If you find you simply hate it, then there's always the mod for future games.
The fade is a must have experience, if you haven't done it before. I agree with the above comments, namely, that it is atmospheric, beneficial to your character and important to the theme/lore of Dragon Age. Albeit, on my third or fourth play through it did start to drag and I must admit that I downloaded the Skip the Fade Mod. So if you haven't played the fade before you should.
I think people complain too much these days...
I wouldn't call it bad. It's, at worst, somewhat confusing. If you want to get all the upgrades you will probably need to consult a guide. But you can just power through and get maybe half of them. It was designed in that way, to reward you if you invest the effort, but you're not really forced to.
I found it to be an interesting and imaginative change of pace, and definitely would not recommend just outright skipping it.
I did it my first run or two, and I would say for the full game experience, it's worth doing at least once. But yeah, I added the mod to skip it, too. It's tedious, IMO, and the worst part is that you don't get much, if any, loot (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The stat points are nice, but the mod adds those in.
It's not worth doing even once imo. Skip the fade mod FTW.
