I just recently purchased all the DOOM games as they were on special on steam and was very disappointed to find this bug was still present just like my original retain version of Final DOOM.

I was also disappointed to find that the setup.exe file was missing from the steam version so I needed to copy it from my old retain version before I could setup all the doom games to use my hardware Roland Canvas SC-55 midi synth (yes I know there are better more modern midi options, but I like the way my old Roland SC-55 and MT-32 sound for DOS games).

So now I have a good excuse to purchase them again DRM free on GOG :-)

The current deal for the doom games and quake1 + the 2 addons (which I don't have any longer) being cheaper here than the full price for quake1 + the 2 addons also helps.

Buying these and Quake are kinda useless if you already have them on Steam. Just copy the wads for DOOM and run them with a source port like any sane human would do. Who wants to play them in DOSBox. GZDOOM is way better

If you have the games on Steam, it's not worth buying again. The Steam versions of these games contain no DRM. You can copy the folders anywhere you like and they'll run fine even without the Steam client installed. The Steam client is just launching DOSBox which has no DRM, and the old DOS versions of these games have no DRM either.

I bought the doom games again because they are now DRM Free!!! They have given me so much joy over the years that I'm happy to re-buy DRM free versions.

I'd do the same for purely idealistic reasons, but I'm not made of money - and as mentioned before, Doom has been open-source for years anyway. If I'm buying any Beth-Soft game here that I already own, it's Morrowind - because that game is still closed-source and has (to my knowledge) never been released before without any kind of DRM or copy-protection. Here's hoping CoC: Dark Corners, Dishonored, New Vegas and Wolfie TNO will someday follow.

I have the steam versions of all the DOS DOOM Games and they do not include the setup.exe required to change the music settings and keyboard configs.

But you can legally download the latest shareware version from http://www.doomarchive.com/download.asp?FileId=1078 and other places on the web of doom1.9s and install it under dosbox then copy the setup.exe into you steam installs of DOOM1, DOOM2 and Final DOOM.

I have played the DOOM games most months since their release 20 years ago and even though I just purchased them less that a month ago on steam as I did not have the DOOM master levels, I have repurchased them as to me having them DRM free and complete with the setup.exe and pre fixed missisng key for final DOOM was worth it.

The fact that I did not own the Quake expansions and the purchase price on gog for the DOOM and Quake bundle is the same as just purchasing quake1 and the addon on steam also helped you also get the CD version of Elder Scrolls: Arena
for free (only the floppy disk version is available for free else were), as I have not tried it I can't say if its any better than the floppy disk version. But you are correct you don't get anything for the DOOM games that you don't already have from the stream versions and free 3rd party downloads to get the final doom missing key patch and missing setup.exe file that is available with the shareware version of doom anyway.

Actually, you can get the CD version of Elder Scrolls: Arena for free elsewhere. Here it is, bundled with DOSBox, unofficial patches and fixes.
